Al Goddard est inspecteur des services postaux aériens. Ses supérieurs l'envoient dans la petite ville de Gary, dans l'Indiana. Un officier vient d'y perdre brutalement la vie, éliminé par des malfrats. Al Goddard rencontre soeur Augustine, seul témoin capable d'identifier un membre de la bande qui a commis l'assassinat. Après avoir interrogé la religieuse, Goddard infiltre le gang en feignant d'être un inspecteur postal passé de l'autre côté de la barrière, tandis que dans l'ombre, la soeur Augustine lui apporte une aide précieuse. Les bandits s'apprêtent à commettre un hold-up dont le butin s'élève à un million de dollars.

Cleve Marshall adjoint au procureur général noie dans l’alcool ses déboires conjugaux dans un bureau de police de Los Angeles dans l’attente de son ami, l’inspecteur Scott. Il y rencontre une étrange femme, portant autour du cou une écharpe pailletée, Thelma Jordon. La jeune femme, le prenant pour un officier de police, lui signale des tentatives de cambriolages chez sa vieille tante fortunée. Marshall fini par emmener Thelma au restaurant et succombe à son charme. Elle est séparée de son mari Tony Laredo, truand notoire, et après un passé tumultueux s’est réfugiée chez sa tante. Les deux amants se rencontrent en cachette quand un soir la femme téléphone à Marshall que sa tante vient d’être assassinée.

John Forbes, marié et père de famille, dirige une compagnie d'assurance. Malgré des journées bien remplies, il trouve sa vie monotone. Un jour, il a l'occasion de briser cette monotonie : Bill Smiley, assuré chez Forbes, tente d'escroquer ce dernier et détourne l'argent de son assurance pour offrir des cadeaux à sa maîtresse, Mona Stevens. Dans un premier temps, Forbes veut récupérer son argent mais tombe rapidement sous le charme de Mona et devient son amant. MacDonald, un détective indépendant qui travaille pour la compagnie d'assurance de Forbes, voit cette liaison d'un mauvais œil car il avait déjà des vues sur Mona. Obsédé par l'idée de nuire à Forbes, MacDonald décide de lui tendre un piège, aidé par Bill et Mona.

During the crime, Steve Reynolds, another innocent man is involved and killed in the escape. After a high-speed chase, the car crashes and Durling is knocked unconscious while the bandits get away. The police arrest Durling but refuse to believe that he wasn't one of the robbers.

Nancy spends the evening with her boyfriend at the Downtown Club, a notorious hangout for members of the criminal underworld. Quite recently the club was the scene of a murder. Nancy witnesses what she believes is a holdup at the very next table, and instinctively she hits the gunman over the head with a champagne bottle, knocking him out completely. The gunman, Sam Boone, is really an undercover police officer posing as a gangster, who was trying to make an arrest when Nancy hit him. Even though Nancy and Sam really didn’t meet under the best of circumstances, they soon take a liking to each other, and eventually marry. Exactly two years later they return to the Downtown Club and the ”crime scene” in order to celebrate their first meeting.

The plot concerns Susan Darell (Joan Fontaine), an actress from New York, who is about to be married, even though they have only known each other for a few weeks. Complications set in when her fiancé Richard Aiken (Walter Abel) gives a party to celebrate. He discovers that Susan has had three previous boyfriends when he sees their pictures in her living room. At the party he talks to the three former beaus of Susan, each of whom describes Susan as an entirely different person. They tell him how they met and fell in love with her. The first one to talk to Richard is Broadway producer Roger Berton (George Brent), who met Susan on a vacation island. He discovered her acting talent and cast her in role in his new production of Joan of Arc. The next beau is Mike Ward (Don DeFore), an industrialist Millionaire, whom he met when making a deal with the producer. He discovered that Susan was too much of a cosmopolitan girl for his taste. The third man was a novelist named Bill Anthony (Dennis O'Keefe), who met Susan in a park. While spending time with Bill, Susan began an intellectual era, but she decides not to go through with their plans to marry, leaving Bill at the altar. The fiancé Richard Aiken hesitates in going through with the wedding because he is not sure just who is the real Susan. All the other three men agree that they still love Susan, and she ultimately chooses the Broadway producer to be her husband.

When a young pilot, Daniel Bellamy, is presumed dead after crashbombing an enemy aircraft carrier, the footage of the crash and his presumably final reminiscence of walking in the park with 'Piggy' and kissing her on the nose is sent back home. A typographical error in transcribing his words becomes a tribute to heroism, while a girl who worked in his office, Peggy, is thought to be the object of his secret love. However, Dan returns home and in order to save embarrassment for both the girl and himself, he tries to keep up the pretense. Dan reveals that he was not speaking of a girl, but in fact he meant his dog. A series of comical mishaps ensue, leading to resolution of the misunderstanding. The resolution, however, is long coming.
