An archaeological team, digging in a remote village and led by an old professor, unearths an old Roman artifact, a gravestone bearing some mysterious inscriptions. After realizing that they have stumbled upon something precious, the professor collapses with a heart attack. Seemingly dead for people around him, he finds himself in a sort of afterlife state and realizes that the stone marked a passage into the classical underworld so he starts mingling with the antique spirits of the dead. The spirits themselves appear just as silly and petty as the peasants from the village above them, and in their desire to see what happened to their descendants, they find themselves surprised by the modern world of the living.

A man dies in a foreign land. On his deathbed he asks his son to bury his bones in his fatherland, a country of brave and honest people, a country of tragic but heroic past. His son wonders the world unsuccessfully looking for his father's home. En 1905, les familles paysannes Kradnik et Kifke, d'un village frontalier polonais, sont de prospères éleveurs de chevaux qu'ils vont notamment voler en Russie pour les revendre en Allemagne. Les Cosaques viennent leur annoncer que leurs chevaux sont réquisitionnés pour renforcer la cavalerie russe qui doit aller combattre les Japonais. Indigné par cette décision, Schloime Kradnik exige de rencontrer le chef cosaque Stoloff. Ce dernier décrète que village et chevaux appartiennent au Tsar Nicolas. Les villageois vont tenter de soustraire leurs chevaux à cette réquisition.

The film starts with the publication of general mobilization in Serbia on July 26, 1914 in Belgrade. An artillery second lieutenant, who comes from a wealthy banking family, was assigned to the artillery battery. During the Balkan Wars of 1912-1913, he was a member of the Commission, which had provided guns for the army. His family now wants to put him in the commission again. He wants to join the battery and go to war instead.
