Ben Lyon est un acteur américain né à Atlanta le 6 février 1901; mort à Honolulu le 22 mars 1979.

Biographie

Ben Lyon a commencé sa carrière au cinéma muet. Il a joué avec Jean Harlow en 1930, dans Les Anges de l'enfer d'Howard Hughes. Devenu cadre à la 20th Century Fox, c'est lui qui fit passer à Marilyn Monroe son premier bout d'essai en 1946. Il trouvait d'ailleurs qu'elle ressemblait à Jean Harlow. À l'époque, elle s'appelait encore Norma Jeane Baker (ou Mortensen). Cette dernière lui sera toujours reconnaissante de l'avoir aidée dans sa carrière et pour sa gentillesse. Lyon est l'un des rares hommes à ne pas avoir affirmé après la mort de l'actrice qu'il fut son amant, contrairement à beaucoup d'autres.

Il fut l'époux de Bebe Daniels, de 1930 à 1971 (date de sa mort), puis de Marian Nixon De 1974 à 1979.

Stephen Torg (Lom) seeks work at a struggling traveling circus. While there, a lion escapes; Torg is able to control it with his skill at hypnotism. Phil Danton (Lyon), the head of the circus, is so impressed, he hires the newcomer. Then someone comes up with an idea. Torg hypnotizes Mary (Crawford) so that she can perform a dangerous aerial stunt without props. Her partner and boyfriend, Tom Danton (Farrar) is suspicious, but is overruled by the others.

British Captain Bill Hamilton meets and is attracted to American fashion designer Ann Morgan in Paris during the Phoney War stage of hostilities. He also makes the acquaintance of Sydney-Chronicle reporter Butch. Later, he is assigned by MI5 to investigate Ann. The fashion house where she works is a center of German fifth columnists, headed by Van Der Stuyl and Madame Florien. MI5 suspects Ann herself is a spy, but Bill is certain she is innocent. Her friend, Count Raul De La Vague, however, has been gulled by Van Der Stuyl and Madame Florien into believing that they are working for Franco-German peace and cooperation against communism. The count is told to donate an ambulance to the French cause. A German spy conceals a message inside the door.

Jill Trevor (Baxter) vows revenge on newspaper baron Sir Joshua Morple (Athole Stewart), who she holds responsible for ruining her father. Her very public antics to draw attention to Morple's despicable conduct come to the notice a rival newspaper, who send journalist Jim Brent (Lyon) to offer to write up Jill's story, in the hope that he will be able to dig up some dirt on Morple. Jim is initially sceptical, seeing Jill as a silly attention-seeking airhead, but as he gets to know her he changes his mind and realises there is substance to her claims, so the pair join forces to discredit Morple publicly, at the same time as starting to fall in love with each other.
