Blinky Bill est un petit koala doué d'une grande imagination. Aventurier dans l’âme, il rêve de quitter sa petite ville , et de suivre les traces de son père explorateur. M. Bill s’est perdu dans l’Outback australien il y a quelque temps et Blinky est désormais la seule personne à croire que son père est toujours en vie. Mais c’est un monde dangereux - qui recèle de créatures sauvages, petites et grandes - et la mère protectrice de Blinky le garde tout près d’elle. Lorsque Blinky tombe sur un marqueur mystérieux qui lui indique l’emplacement de son père, il ne peut plus résister à l’appel de l’aventure. Il montre le marqueur à sa mère, mais bien que celle-ci ressente une légère nostalgie de son passé d’aventurière avec son bien-aimé Bill, elle interdit à Blinky de partir. Meredith Appleton (Miranda Otto) arrives on South Solitary island with her elderly uncle George Wadsworth (Barry Otto). Her uncle has been sent as the new replacement Head Lighthouse Keeper as the previous one committed suicide. Her uncle is shown to be a gruff man very critical of the slightest disorder. Meredith meets the girl Nettie (Annie Martin), a local girl whom she asks to care for her lamb. She then meets the mother, Alma Stanley (Essie Davis) and her two sons, Tom (Reef Ireland) and Robbie (Benson Adams). The father, Harry Stanley (Rohan Nichol) takes the George for a tour of inspection. George is disapproving of the state of the loose animals, the absence of lighthouse keeper Jack Fleet (Marton Csokas), and a previous history of lighthouse outages. The first night, as Meredith is preparing tea for her uncle, she hears baby birds chirping in the stovepipe. She douses the fire and is not able to prepare hot tea for her uncle. During Jack Fleet's watch, he has a panic attack brought on by his war experiences. Nettie introduces Meredith to the emergency message system using homing pigeons. Nettie tries to send a message that all is well on South Solitary but the birds return to their coop thus rendering the system useless. While having afternoon tea with Alma, we learn that Meredith is unable to give birth. She lost her fiancé in the war, then became pregnant during an affair with a married man. Complications cause her womb to be removed. Harry visits her during her bath, and seduces her. Alma becomes aware of her husband's infidelity, and informs George, then forces her family to leave the island on the next passing ship. While pushing up a store of supplies from the beach, George is forced to overly exert himself and becomes very ill and dies. Jack must keep solitary watch as there is no one else. They bury George and provide a eulogy for him. A whole gale forms while Meredith is at the lighthouse forcing her to stay there for several days. Meredith learns how to turn the lighthouse and the Flag semaphore system. She conveys her sense of loneliness to Jack and her desire for a sense of permanence. Jack has a panic attack, seeing hallucinations of a ship in distress, and runs into the wilderness. While going through the island, she finds her lost lamb, and Jack helps her recover it. Jack sees a ship in the distance and signals for it to pick up Meredith. She begs him to let her stay but he feels insecure being close to someone. As she leaves, they kiss, and he promises to come visit her on the mainland. Meredith is seen smiling as she floats away from South Solitary.

Angelo Donnini and his younger brother Gino are of Italian origin, living in Australia in the 1950s. Angelo is insecure, silent and introverted and not at all good-looking, while Gino is the complete opposite: outgoing, funny and handsome. Angelo looks for a wife and writes letters to Italian girls in hope of a match. But his letters are always returned with his photograph. One day, he desperately sends a new letter with a picture of his brother to Rosetta, who falls in love instantly with the man in the picture and therefore accepts his marriage proposal. When she arrives in Australia she is of course appalled that Angelo does not look like the man she thought she had married. However, she stays, to try to gain Gino's affections. But Gino has a girlfriend, Connie, a wise and tough girl who knows exactly what she wants. She loves Gino, but wishes he possessed more of Angelo's qualities. Though Gino tries to avoid Rosetta, he cannot help but eventually fall in love with her. Gino and Connie have an argument and they call it quits, and Angelo and Connie start to develop a romance. In the end, Rosetta, believing that she has failed to gain Gino's affections, decides to return to Italy with the help of Father Alfredo. Gino follows her onto the ship and they embrace. The couple then marry. In the final scene of the film, which seems to be few years later, it shows the wedding party of Connie and Angelo, while Gino is married to Rosetta and they have a newborn baby.

"Michael, in his beach-home in Australia, is avoiding phone calls regarding his lifelong dear friend and former lover of two-years, Chris who is dying back in Boston America. After a big wave and a wipe out, C.K. disappears in the surf. Michael loses sight of C.K. until he sees him on the beach taking off his wetsuit before he heads back home. Michael remains on the beach then makes his way home. Once inside his house, Michael sees C.K. walking towards him on his way to the living room where he makes himself at home. Michael does not know why the surfer is in his house but before the night is over he will discover more about himself than he may have been ready for.
