Anil Chatterjee (Chattopadhyay) Bengali: অনিল চ্যাটার্জী (চট্টোপাধ্যায়) (25 October 1929 – 17 March 1996) was a Bengali actor in the Bengali cinema during the early fifties through the mid-nineties and is mostly remembered as a character actor. He acted or performed in about 150 movies, including a few in Hindi. He played different shades, though mostly as a character actor, as well as in leading roles and at times as an antagonist, despite the limited opportunities he received. Irrespective of the roles, he left an indelible impression on the viewers and the critics. He also acted in the leading role in a tele-serial named "Naqab" in the national network of Doordarshan. He is one of the very few selected actors who worked with Satyajit Ray, Ritwik Ghatak, Tapan Sinha and Mrinal Sen; with the first three directors, he performed in more than a number of occasion. His performance in the title role of the film "Deshbandhu Chittaranjan" [a biopic on the noted and revered freedom-fighter and barrister Chittaranjan Das (1870-1925) who was conferred the title of "Deshbandhu (Friend of the Country)"] won the appreciation of Basanti Devi, the wife of the "Deshbandhu" (she is said to have personally blessed the actor) apart from being widely admired by one and all.
Born in Calcutta, West Bengal, India, he graduated from St. Xavier's College, Kolkata - the institution to which he remained attached all through as an office-bearer and member of The Alumnoram Soceitas (Alumni Society) of the College. Prior to that, he completed his schooling from Delhi, having stood first in entire North India in the Senior Cambridge Examinations. In his college days, he became associated with Utpal Dutta and acted in a number of plays. He was also a Member of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly [MLA], having won the bye-election from the erstwhile Chowringhee Assembly Constituency as a Left Front supported Independent candidate.

After years of painstaking research at the cost of his personal life, Dr. Dipankar Roy (Pankaj Kapoor) discovers a vaccine for leprosy. The news is flashed over television and overnight, an insignificant junior doctor receives international recognition. Professional jealousy and abuse of power threaten Dr. Roy, even as the Secretary of Health reprimands him for breaking the news to the press. He is asked to report to the Director of Health. Professional colleagues Dr. Arijit Sen and Dr. Ramananda invite him to a lecture but it is merely a pretence to humiliate him. Dr. Roy suffers a mild heart attack but he refuses to go to the hospital. His wife (Shabana Azmi) and a few others like Dr. Kundu (Anil Chatterjee) and Amulya (Irfan Khan) stand by Dr. Roy, but the harassment continues; a letter from a British foundation, John Anderson Foundation, is suppressed and Dr. Roy transferred to a remote village. The last straw is two American doctors receiving credit for discovering the same vaccine. Dr. Roy is shattered.However, at the end Dr. Roy gets an invitation from John Anderson Foundation inviting him to be a part of an eminent group of scientists working on other diseases . Dipankar Roy realizes that his research was fruitful. He also decides to accept the invitation as he just wants to work for the betterment of mankind.

One evening, in the midst of torrential rains, a professor (Shreeram Lagoo) goes out for a walk and fails to return. As the evening stretches into days and the days into weeks with no sign of him, the member of his family struggle both to regain their footing and to understand what might have caused him to leave. Slowly they return to their quotidian activities. Le film s'ouvre sur l'incendie d'un village de dalits (intouchables) du Bihar. Un couple, Naurangia (Naseeruddin Shah) et son épouse enceinte Rama (Shabana Azmi) fuit le village en feu et le massacre de ses habitants. Un flashback révèle les évènements qui ont conduit à l'attaque du village. Un nouvel instituteur, aux idées progressistes, avait entrepris de politiser les habitants du village, menaçant ainsi la domination du propriétaire terrien. Il est finalement assassiné par le frère de ce dernier. Naurangia, à la tête d'un groupe de villageois, tue le meurtrier, ce qui conduit en représailles à l'incendie du village. Muni d'une lettre de recommandation, Naurangia et Rama cherchent du travail à Calcutta, sans succès. Ils apprennent que le gouvernement va octroyer une compensation financière aux victimes de l'attaque. Lassés de chercher en vain, ils ne peuvent cependant pas rentrer chez eux, faute d'argent pour payer le voyage. Enfin, on leur propose de faire traverser le Gange, à la nage, à un troupeau de porcs. L'argent gagné leur permettrait de rentrer chez eux, mais la traversée est périlleuse. Lorsque enfin ils atteignent l'autre rive, Rama ne sent plus bouger son enfant. Le film se termine cependant sur une note d'optimisme : Naurangia colle son oreille sur le ventre de sa femme et entend l'enfant bouger.

The film is set in during the Emergency period in December 1975. Jadunath a labour union leader, of Jethia Jute Mill in Kolkata has been given death sentence, for the murders of owner Jethia’s brother, and another worker, even though he never committed them. Before dying, he pledges his eyes for donation. However, when the mill owner finds about this, he tries to manoeuvre the medical system to get both the eyes for his blind son. Meanwhile the doctor discovers that the donation papers provided by the Jethia to be fake. Soon the mill workers get united behind the widow of Jadunath and hold protest rally against the injustice.
