Summerville was born in County Kildare, Ireland and migrated to Toronto, Canada as a child.
She first appeared on stage at the age of 7 in an operetta in Toronto.
In 1884, Summerville appeared in her first leading role in the play Adonis. She originated the role of Rosetta, the Mountain Maid.
Summerville appeared in fourteen Broadway plays from 1899 to 1925. She also performed in silent films during the 1910s and 1920s.

À la fin du XV siècle, Tito (William Powell) s'installe à Florence et fait la connaissance d'un érudit aveugle, Bardo Bardi, dont il gagne la confiance, et de sa fille Romola (Lillian Gish). Il rencontre une autre jeune fille, Tessa (Dorothy Gish), et par jeu il organise un faux mariage avec elle, mariage que Tessa croit réel. Sans être amoureuse de Tito, Romola l'épouse pour obéir à son père, et Tessa, trahie, finit par se noyer. Petit à petit, Tito fait son chemin et accède au poste de chef de la magistrature. Mais il abuse de son pouvoir et est détesté par le peuple. Lorsque celui-ci se révolte, Tito est tué et Romola peut se marier avec Carlo Buccelini (Ronald Colman) qui l'aime depuis toujours.

A priest (Sydney) is in love with an Italian opera singer (Keane), and the drama involves the conflict between his efforts to rise above worldly things or to leave with her. The romance ends with a deep note of pathos.
