Alberto Tavazzi (1912–2006) was an Italian painter, art director and occasional actor.

From 1939 Tavazzi began working on the design and construction of film sets. He was a friend of the director Roberto Rossellini, who cast him in the title role as a Catholic Priest in his 1943 war film The Man with a Cross. Tavazzi played a priest again in Rossellini's 1945 neorealist drama Rome, Open City.

1944. Rome est déclarée « ville ouverte » ; le chef d'un réseau de résistance communiste, l'ingénieur Manfredi, traqué par la Gestapo, se cache chez un imprimeur, Francesco, bientôt marié à Pina (Anna Magnani) qui le fait rentrer en contact avec Don Pietro, le curé de la paroisse, résistant lui aussi. Le petit Marcello, le fils de Pina et de son premier mari décédé, participe, avec les gamins de son âge à des actions de résistance spontanées. Pietro fournit des faux-papiers à Manfredi.

L'action se passe en Ukraine sur le front de l'Est durant l'été 1942. Un régiment de chars du C.S.I.R. (Corpo di Spedizione Italiano in Russia) de retour d'une action de guerre reçoit l'ordre de déplacer son camp de base pour favoriser une manœuvre militaire. Les hommes et les véhicules se mettent en mouvement selon le plan établi à l'exception de l'aumônier du régiment (Tavazzi) qui reste pour assister un conducteur de char blessé et intransportable.

Ercole Pappalardo (Totò), marié et père de cinq filles, est un petit employé de l'administration qui n'est pas satisfait de sa condition, et cherche par tous les moyens à gravir les échelons. Mais malgré sa volonté, tout va mal se passer. Les faits coquasses se multiplient : il crache accidentellement au visage du ministre, l'insulte par l’intermédiaire d'un perroquet. De plus, il n'a pas les diplômes requis pour son poste actuel. Il passe des examens mais il est recalé. Ercole Pappalardo, après tous ces événements tragi-comiques, décide de prendre une décision radicale, celle de mourir : depuis l'au-delà, il communiquera les numéros gagnants du lotto à sa femme. Mais dans l'au-delà , cela n'est pas permis et il va être châtié. Cependant, quand le juge apprend que Ercole a travaillé pendant trente ans au ministère, il l’envoie directement au paradis.... Finalement, tout cela n'était qu'un rêve.

Toto De Pasquale (Toto) is the holder of a modest tailoring. The day of the baptism of his son, receives the visit of the Advocate Espinaci (Eduardo Passarelli), charge d'notice the seizure of his property because of a debt long overdue and unpaid. When the lawyer discovers that the wife of De Pasquale (Clelia Matania) is an old friend of his, he decides to postpone. Toto, to ingratiate himself further, he decides to do godfather, forgetting that he had already entrusted the task to brother Matthew (Nino Milano), incurable bully. A few minutes later Toto, the lawyer and Matthew discover that the nurse (Bice Valori) has lost the baby after a fight on the streets with her husband. Without saying anything to his wife, Toto goes to look for the child and, in order not to suspect anything to the new mother, the child does bring the Romolini, a family of distracted students living close to De Pasquale. Oblivious to the fact that the child is brought home by a friend of De Pasquale mercy, Toto, the lawyer and Matthew end up at the home of a prostitute (Isa Barzizza) and his crazy protector (Guido Celano). Later, they are led to believe that the child has been brought in the wrong country estate of Romolini. Once in the village on the estate, the three divide and Toto pulls what he believes to be his son (but it is actually the child of Romolini) to grandfather Arturo (Arturo Bragaglia), who called for help immediately denounced the kidnapping of the baby. A few minutes later, the entire town chasing the poor tailor, mistaken for a kidnapper. Toto may first lynching and then fall from the roof of a building. At the end of many vicissitudes, Toto joins lawyer and brother with the baby, but arrived at the church where the baptism was to take place, he discovers that his son was already baptized. The poor man must therefore suffer the insults of the lawyer (who threatens to sequestrargli the workshop on behalf of its customers) and the mother-in-law (who denies financial support), as well as Romolini. At the end of the film, Toto sits on the steps of the church, while everyone is running behind a tow truck on which was accidentally placed his son and the small Romolini.
