Adoor Pankajam (1925 – 26 June 2010) was an Indian actress, in Malayalam movies. She hailed from Adoor in Pathanamthitta district of Kerala state. Mainly, she was a supporting actress, and a comedian. Her sister Adoor Bhavani was also a Malayalam cinema actress.

Pankajam's most noted performance was in the national award winning film Chemmeen as Nalla Pennu. She also did a pivotal role in India's first neo-realistic film Newspaper Boy (1955). In 2008, Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Academy honoured Pankajam and Bhavani for their overall contributions to theatre and drama.

She died on 26 June 2010.

Biographie

Adoor Pankajam was born to Adoor Paarappurathu Kunjuraman Pillai and Kunjoonjamma in 1925 and was the second child of 8 children. Her sister Adoor Bhavani also became famous later through plays and movies.

She could only study till 4th standard due to financial difficulties. But still she continued her music studies under Panthalam Krishnapillai Bhagavathar till the age of 11. By this time, she has done musical kacheri in most of the temples around her village.

At 12, she started acting in Kannur Kerala Kalanilayam troupe against the will of her parents. She acted in their play Madhumadhurayam in over 300 stages. Her next play was Rakthabhandham by a theater in Chengannoor. In this play, she did a comic role which was widely accepted.

She met Devarajan Potti, the owner of Kollam Bharatha Kalachandrika while she was working with this troupe and later got married to him. Potti later started another troupe called Parthasarathy Theaters and during her tenure with this troupe, she got invitation to act in movies.

She has a son named Ajayan, who is a cinema/TV serial actor.

Chandappan Gurukkal (Narendra Prasad) and Chathukutty Bhagavathar (Nedumudi Venu) are brothers who are popularly known as Alanchery Thamprakkal. Hailing from feudal family, both enjoy a strong reputation in the village. Both have five sons each, and they share a strong bonding. While Gurukal and sons are experts in Kalaripayattu and other martial arts, Bhagavathar and sons are famous musicians. Meera (Annie), a teenage girl arrives at the village along with Retd.Captain Mukundan Menon (Rajan P. Dev), her grandfather and starts residing at the house of Bhagavathar on rent. She claims to Bhagavathar that she is the daughter of Karthu, his old lover, who was forced to leave the village long back for being pregnant with his daughter. Meera also adds that she is now back to meet her father and would like him to accept as her daughter. After consulting with Gurukkal, he decides to accept her as his daughter. But at the same time another person arrives, claiming himself as Bhagavathar's son. But when beaten severely by Bhagavathar's sons, he spells out the truth that he is a drama actor and has arrived for money. In the meantime, Unni (Dileep), son of Gurukkal falls in love with Meera and both Gurukkal and Bhagavathar decides to get her married to him. While things are moving smoothly, Keshu Varma (Shivaji) arrives at village claiming that Meera is none other than his daughter Lekha Varma, who had escaped from a mental hospital along with Syriac John another patient. Thamprakkal are adamant that they won't let Varma to take Meera away. But Varma warns that he will be back in a week to take her away. On questioning, Meera accepts the truth that she is the daughter of Varma and had escaped from a mental hospital along with Syriac John. Keshu varma is her mother's secon husband, who wanted to kill her to snatch away all the properties. She was forcefully admitted in a mental hospital and was given sedatives. At hospital, she met the mother of Thamprakkal, another patient, who told her the stories of Alanchery and the life of Thamprakkal. After escaping from the hospital, she along with Syriac John had reached Thamprakkal and fabricated the story to save herself from Varma. Thamprakkal decides to protect her. On the next week, upon arriving at the village, Varma and his goons are defeated by Thamprakkal and his sons. Meera is married to Unni and everything ends happily.

Kunjunni's (Vishwanathan) parents separate soon after his birth, and he's left to be cared by his mother, void of paternal care and affection. He is brought up by his mother with the help of his grandmother, an estimate manager and his friend Meenakshi (Mini Nair), the daughter of a maid servant working in Kunjunni's house. Inspired by his Uncle (Narendra Prasad), who was initially a Gandhian, and eventually a Marxist, Kunjunni finds himself drawn to left-wing ideologies during his studies at college, believing that communism is the answer to heal all social hardships and inequalities. Eventually he joins an extremist Marxist group, and his affairs land him in trouble. After an attack at a police station, Kunjunni is arrested and taken to court, but later acquitted of all charges.

In this Indian story, based on a Kerala legend, a pious and self-disciplined master carpenter of a supposedly mixed-caste background, moves easily in his world, building temples and then carving the stone statues which embellish them. He is at home in his traditional world, is at peace with his inner self and the social mores of the time. By way of contrast, he begets a son who is of rebellious nature and questioning of the traditional social hierarchies of the time. He falls in love with the daughter of a royal household which ultimately leads to his demise.
