Khalujan et son neveu Babban forment un duo de petits escrocs se faisant passer pour un Nawab et son valet. Séparés dans leur fuite après avoir volé un collier de prix, ils se retrouvent à la cour de la Begum Para, récemment veuve. Celle-ci organise une joute poétique dont le vainqueur obtiendra sa main et deviendra le Nawab de Mahmudabad. Khalujan participe au concours et tombe sous le charme de la belle Begum tandis que Babban s'éprend de sa suivante, la ravissante Muniya. Mais le titre de Nawab est également convoité par Jaan Mohammad, gangster des griffes duquel Khalujan et Babban ont les plus grandes difficultés à tirer les deux charmantes femmes. Malheureusement, cela ne leur vaut guère de reconnaissance.

Ishqiya starts with Krishna Verma (Vidya Balan) trying to convince her husband, Vidyadhar Verma (Adil Hussain), a local gang-lord, that he should surrender. He agrees but is soon killed in a gas explosion. Two criminals Iftikhar aka Khalujan (Naseeruddin Shah) and Razzak Hussain aka Babban (Arshad Warsi) botch up a job and escape from the clutches of their boss Mushtaq (Salman Shahid), who wants to bury them alive. They land up in Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh to seek refuge in the house of Vidyadhar Verma.

The film tells the story of three individuals, Harphool Singh Mandola a.k.a. Guddu et Charlie sont des frères qui sont nés et ont grandi à Dharavi, le quartier le plus pauvre au monde situé au cœur de Mumbai. Son job n'est qu'un début et le chemin vers la réussite est à la fois long et difficile. Guddu est honnête, appliqué et prudent (surtout prudent). Charlie gagne sa vie en pariant sur les courses de chevaux. Il se mêle aux personnes riches et célèbres du milieu hippique. Pour lui c'est une façon de se faire de l'argent rapidement et son rêve est de devenir bookmaker. Charlie est débrouillard, futé et courageux (mais uniquement pour lui-même).

The story is set in a small village near Banikhet, Himachal Pradesh and revolves around a young girl Biniya and village's only shop owner Nand Kishore Khatri. Biniya lives with her mother and elder brother. One day she comes across a blue color Japanese umbrella while herding her family cows. The umbrella is revealed to be belonging to a group of Japanese tourists. Biniya develops a liking for the umbrella and trades it with her bear claw necklace called Yantra with the Japanese tourists. Wearing a bear claw necklace is considered to be auspicious and bring good luck. For that she is scolded by her mother. Everyone in the village is amazed by the beauty of the umbrella and Biniya acquires a celebrity like status. This makes some people jealous of her. The shopkeeper Khatri and Lajvanti (wife of village school teacher) covet for such an umbrella but find themselves unable to buy due to its high cost. Lajvanti even hints toward the possibility of stealing Biniya's umbrella. Khatri tries to buy it from Biniya but she refuses.
