C'est jour d'exécution à Canton, qui vit sous le joug des Mandchous. Liu Yu-Te, fils du poissonnier est étudiant du Professeur Ho. Avec deux de ses camarades, il voit les corps des rebelles exposés. C'en est trop, et il décide de s'engager auprès de son professeur dans la résistance. Il fera passer des messages à travers les poissons séchés. Mais les activités du professeur sont vite découvertes, et une répression est organisée. Les deux camarades et la famille de Liu sont tués.

A young monk lives a simple life in a temple on top of a hill. He has one daily task of hauling two buckets of water up the hill. One day, a skinny monk arrives. The young monk tries to share the job with the skinny monk, but the carry pole is only long enough for one bucket. So, they decided to carry one bucket in the center. But when they go up and down hill, the bucket moves. The weight was not even to them both, so they argued a lot. A few days after, a fat monk joined them. The fat monk drank all the water! Then the other two monks wanted the fat monk to bring the two buckets of water up. But as soon as the fat monk brought the water up, he drank it all again. At this point, everyone to expect that someone else will take on the chore. Consequently, no one fetches water though everybody is thirsty. One night, a rat comes to scrounge and then knocks the candle holder, leading to a devastating fire in the temple. The three monks finally unite together and make a concerted effort to put out the fire. Since then they understand the old saying "unity is strength" and begin to live a harmonious life. The three monks made a pulley, that will help fetching water easily. The temple never lacks water again.

In ancient times, a Persian merchant gets lost in a windstorm. Suddenly a spiritual deer of nine colors appears to guide the man. Later on, the deer rescues a man drowning in a river. In exchange, the man promises not to reveal the deer's whereabouts. The man reaches an imperial palace. The king insists on hunting down the spiritual deer down to make clothes out of the deer skin. The man gives in to his greed and leads an army of warriors to the spot. He falls into the river again, hoping the deer will show up to rescue him. This time, all the warriors' arrows turn into dust and the man is drowned.

Ce film raconte l'histoire d'un moine bouddhiste qui, sortant de son ermitage au bout de 3 ans, 3 mois et 3 jours, recherche l'Illumination. De retour auprès de ses compagnons lamas, il est soudain en proie à de troublantes pulsions sexuelles. Au cours d'une expédition dans un village voisin, il fait la connaissance de Pema, une jeune femme dont il tombe amoureux. Des doutes l'assaillent et ébranlent son engagement spirituel. Apo, son moine tuteur, décide alors de l'envoyer dans un ermitage où des textes et pratiques tantriques l'initieront aux mystères de la vie sexuelle. Tashi comprend qu'il doit vivre certaines expériences s'il veut un jour y renoncer. Il choisit de quitter le monastère et de rejoindre le tourbillon du monde humain, le samsāra, pour le meilleur et pour le pire.
