It is an adaptation of the novel Via Mala by John Knittel. It was released in April 1945, a month before the unconditional surrender of Germany. The film is visually expressionist, something comparatively rare during the Nazi era.
Synopsis
In a rural village, the tyrannical Jonas Lauretz intimidates his family, mistress and neighbours. After he disappears one night, it is widely believed that his eldest daughter, Silvelie, has murdered him. A new investigating judge arrives in the village, he falls in love with Silvelie. He becomes torn between his love for her and his duty to investigate the potential crime. Eventually it emerges that it was not Silvelie who murdered Jonas Lauretz but the village innkeeper Bündner. He is forgiven by everyone because they all shared his desire to murder him.Acteurs

Depuis trois ans, Laura (Julia Roberts) et Martin (Patrick Bergin) semblent former le couple parfait, dans leur luxueuse villa au bord de l'océan. En réalité, Martin est extrêmement maniaque et d'une jalousie maladive, sujet à des accès de violence inouïe envers Laura. Celle-ci, décidée à fuir, apprend d'abord à nager, à l'insu de son mari, puis profite d'une sortie nocturne en mer sur le voilier d'un ami, pour simuler une noyade. Elle est ainsi considérée morte. Elle migre dans un état lointain, entame une nouvelle vie, sous le nom de Sara Waters, se rapproche aussi de sa mère, aveugle, et placée en maison spécialisée. Mais rapidement, Martin lève le lièvre, d'abord en recevant les condoléances de la directrice de l'association grâce à laquelle Laura avait pris des cours de natation, puis en trouvant l'alliance de Laura, qu'elle avait jetée dans les toilettes. Il apprend bientôt que la mère de Laura est elle-même toujours en vie, que la supercherie de Laura avait donc savamment été calculée. Obstiné, enragé, perspicace, Martin remonte bientôt la piste et retrouve Laura souriante, amoureuse d'un autre homme, Ben, professeur de théâtre en faculté, doux et prévenant, son total contraire. Entrant chez elle en catimini, Martin laisse d'abord des témoignages de son arrivée, plongeant son ex épouse dans une terreur légitime. Quand il apparaît enfin, Laura est désarmée. Ben frappant à sa porte, elle l'éconduit pour sa survie, mais Ben entre en force et se fait assommer par Martin. Finalement Laura réussit à s'emparer du revolver de Martin et le tient en joue tout en appelant la police. Martin ne croit pas qu'elle le fera vraiment et, même, lui confesse qu'il saura passer outre les injonctions judiciaires, que rien ne l'empêchera de reprendre sa femme. C'est alors que Laura demande au policier qu'elle a au bout du fil, de venir au plus vite, qu'elle vient de tuer un cambrioleur. Martin sait alors qu'il a été pris à son propre piège. Trois coups de feu seront nécessaires à l'expédier mais il trouvera tout de même le temps de récupérer l'arme. Laura,laissant là le cadavre s'emploie à réconforter Ben qui émerge à peine.

When she was 16 years old, Laurie met and fell in love with an older man, 31-year-old Bruce Kellogg. She soon moves in with him and doesn't know that her stepfather actually sold her to him for $500. They are happy at first, but it soon becomes clear that he has an obsession with young girls. Naive, Laurie doesn't notice anything and does everything to please him. The story centers around Frances Benedetto (Mary Stuart Masterson), a victim of domestic violence. The movie follows Frances's relationship to her increasingly abusive NYCPD officer husband (played by Anthony LaPaglia), who has the police force on his side, and her eventual escape to Florida with her son (played by Will Rothaar). Eventually her husband finds them and attacks her. Her son's sports coach comes to the house when she does not pick her son up from practice on time and finds her beaten and bruised in the hallway. Meanwhile, her husband kidnaps their son. Five years later, she has married the coach and has a daughter, although she has never found her son. Her son meets up with his aunt by chance on the street, and Frances (her name now changed to Beth) receives a phone call from him.
