Vanity is a 1935 British comedy film directed by Adrian Brunel and starring Jane Cain, Percy Marmont and John Counsell. The plot concerns a conceited actress, convinced of the general adoration in which she is held, faking her own death in order to gratify herself by observing the depth of grief caused by her demise. However the actual reactions to the "news" prove to be far from what she had expected.

Wilfred Denver (Marmont) wins the heart of the beautiful Nellie (Jean Jay) and marries her, earning the ongoing festering resentment of Nellie's former beau Geoffrey Ware (Huth). A few years later, Wilfred and Nellie have a daughter, but Wilfred's financial recklessness has left him facing large debts. Geoffrey sees an opportunity for revenge by giving his desperate former friend a surefire insiders' tip on a horse running at generous odds in that year's Epsom Derby. Wilfred lays a large bet which he can ill afford, only to watch in dismay as the horse straggles home at the back of the field. Geoffrey feigns an apology, then urges Wilfred to drown his sorrows. Après plusieurs années de mariage, la vie de Julian avec sa femme Edith a engourdi son inspiration artistique, et il la persuade de prendre un travail pour financer ses études d'art à l'étranger. Julian passe un an à Paris et revient chez lui, très bohème. Edith et lui déménagent dans une colonie d'artistes, et elle réalise rapidement que son affection pour elle s'est affaiblie. Les seules consolations d'Edith sont sa petite fille et son amitié pour Greenough, qui offre de l'épouser. Julian s'écarte volontiers, mais il réalise plus tard ce qu'il a perdu et peint un tableau nommé "Realization", qui lui vaut une reconnaissance internationale. Sa fille Janet a un accident, et Julian revient à temps à son chevet pour la regarder mourir, après quoi Edith et lui décident de recommencer leur vie ensemble.
