Vamsa Vruksham (The genalogy tree), is a 1980 Telugu film directed by Bapu, based on S. L. Bhyrappa's novel. It is a remake of the 1972 Kannada movie Vamsha Vriksha. The film marked Anil Kapoor's debut as an actor in a lead role.

Raja Rao Bahadur (Kanta Rao) is the head of a wealthy and charitable landlord family who has a young son Sreedhar. At his son's request, Rao helps his college friend (Hari) with the costs of higher education abroad. Hari is grateful and invites Sreedhar to his sister Laxmi's (Sangeeta) wedding in the village. Due to unusual circumstances, Sreedhar ends up marrying Lakshmi. This enrages Mukkamala who is the Raja's brother-in-law, who was hopeful of getting his daughter (Jaya Malini) married to Sreedhar.

Maya (Padmini Kolhapure) tente de se suicider lors de sa nuit de noce, mais son mari, Anand (Naseeruddin Shah), un médecin veuf, parvient à la sauver. Elle lui explique alors les raisons de son geste : elle a été contrainte de l'épouser, alors qu'elle souhaitait se marier avec un chanteur de rue, Prem Pratap. Leur histoire d'amour est racontée dans un flashback : Prem (Anil Kapoor) et son assistant, le jeune Chottu, venus à Mumbai pour faire carrière dans le cinéma, louent une chambre chez les parents de Maya. Maya tombe immédiatement amoureuse du chanteur, mais celui-ci, estimant n'être pas un parti digne d'elle, repousse ses avances. Il finit cependant par accepter de l'épouser, mais les parents de Maya les en empêchent. Le Dr Anand s'engage alors à retrouver Prem et à divorcer de Maya. Il lui demande cependant de rester avec lui pour sept jours, afin que sa mère, gravement malade, puisse mourir en ayant l'illusion que son fils a trouvé une épouse. À la mort de sa mère, il réunit Maya et Prem. Celui-ci refuse cependant de briser le mariage d'Anand et de Prem, en affirmant que cela serait contraire à la culture indienne.

On her deathbed, the sister of P.V. Rao (J.V. Somayajulu) entrusts him the custody of her property along with daughters Durga (Sangeetha) and Shanti (Vijayashanti). After her death, he usurps the property and arranges Durga's marriage with a pauper Chalapati (Sarath Babu). After learning maternal uncle's intentions, Durga prepares and sells household items along with Shanti for livelihood. Learning that Rao's son (Suresh) is her cousin, Shanti starts teasing him along with her friend Annapoorna (Sumalatha). After learning their relation, he too starts liking Shanti. Upon hearing about Shanti and his son, Rao accuse the sisters of usurping his property through his son. This enrages Durga, who starts an eatery in front of her uncle's hotel and develops it into a hotel to pull down his business. Rao is bedridden with his business going down. Meanwhile Durga fixes Shanti's wedding with Chandram (Sai Chand), Ananapoorna' s love interest. When Shanti learns this, she informs Rao about her intent to wed his son and requests his help in this matter. Reformed Rao assures her of this and instructs Shanti to follow her sister. On the wedding day, with help of Chalapati, Annapurna and her mother (Rama Prabha), Rao arranges the wedding of Shanti with his son and that of Annapoorna with Chandram. Durga gets angered at the turn of events. The story ends on a happy note with everyone present explaining Durga about the situation.

Shekhar is in love with Roopa and would like to marry her. Roopa is the only daughter of Choudhury, the apple of his eye, and he agrees to get her married to Shekhar. Shekhar informs his parents, his dad, and his stepmother, and together they all go to Choudhury's house to finalize the marriage. At this point, Shekhar's stepmother asks for a hefty sum as dowry, which the Choudhury is unable to afford, and thus the proposal for marriage falls flat, with the Choudhury vowing that he will get his daughter married elsewhere. Shekhar is disgusted with his stepmother, and leaves home and comes to Choudhury and attempts to convince him to reconsider, but Choudhury is adamant, and goes ahead to plan his daughter's marriage with Atmaram, leaving both Shekar and Roopa devastated, and unsure what plan of action to adopt.
