Produced by Daryl Zanuck and released by Warner Brothers it is based on a 1918 Broadway play about World War I spies, Three Faces East. It was filmed as a silent in 1926.
Synopsis
The story takes place during World War I. The action opens on a French battlefield. After meeting with German spy Schiller Blacher (Erich von Stroheim), Z-1 (Constance Bennett) is sent on a mission to England. The action then moves into the London home of Sir Winston Chamberlain (William Holden- no relation to the 1950s star of the same name). Sir Winston does not know that that his supposedly faithful butler, Vardar, is actually Blacher. When Z-1, as Frances Hawtree, arrives at the home, Vardar, who is in love with her, believes her to be a loyal German agent, but things turn out otherwise when she prevents him from sending a stolen code back to Germany and thus reveals her true allegiance.Acteurs

Ellen Neal is hired as servant in the house of the wealthy Winfield family by the butler, Thomas Wroxton, who covets her romantically. Wroxton rules the household staff like a tyrant, demanding a large cut of their weekly wages as his "commission". To his great irritation, Neal resists his advances. Instead, during the family's vacation in New England she becomes romantically involved with the Winfields' son, Richard, who is a college student. They secretly marry and she falls pregnant by him before he returns to college. When the Winfields are told by a vengeful Wroxton that she is pregnant they are initially sympathetic until discovering that the child is their own grandson. A prolonged divorce suit then follows until the couple are finally reconciled.

Pendant la Première Guerre mondiale, dans un camp de prisonniers pour soldats alliés situé en Allemagne, le suicide d'un des prisonniers déclenche une émeute et une tentative d'évasion. Pour punition, tous les hommes sont confinés dans un endroit exigu. Fred Allison, un officier britannique, supplie Carl Erlich, un ancien camarade d'Oxford et nouveau commandant du camp, de libérer les hommes, en promettant d'être personnellement responsable de leur comportement. Jack Digby, un vieil ami d'Allison, fait partie d'un nouveau groupe de prisonniers. Comme Digby avait vu Monica, l'épouse d'Allison, peu avant sa capture, Allison l'interroge à son sujet. Il ne sait pas que Digby et Monica sont tombés amoureux, et Digby se sent coupable d'avoir trahi son ami. Digby a l'intention de s'échapper, bien qu'Allison le supplie de ne pas essayer à cause des ennuis que cela causera aux autres hommes. Digby ignore ces supplications et s'échappe dans un avion garé sur le terrain d'aviation voisin, la nuit même où un autre soldat viole et tue une jeune Allemande. Croyant que Digby est coupable du crime, les Allemands demandent son retour. Erlich demande à Allison de signer la demande, mais il refuse. Toutefois, lorsqu'il découvre dans un manteau de Digby une lettre de Monica dans laquelle elle déclare son amour, il change d'avis et signe la demande. Lors de son procès, Digby accuse Allison de l'avoir condamné à mort pour avoir eu une liaison avec sa femme. Après que Digby a été condamné à être fusillé, Allison trouve dans sa chambre des aveux du soldat coupable du viol et du meurtre, soldat qui s'est suicidé depuis. Allison laisse l'exécution se poursuivre jusqu'à la dernière minute, mais sa conscience le pousse à révéler le vrai meurtrier et Digby est libéré. Allison dit ensuite à Digby qu'il a planifié une évasion pour tout le camp. Il se sert d'un gros canon pour tenir les Allemands à distance pendant que les autres hommes s'échappent dans des avions allemands. Digby revient pour sauver Allison, mais il est trop tard. Erlich et Digby saluent son cadavre.

French General Birabeau has been sent to Morocco to root out and destroy the Riffs, a band of Arab rebels, who threaten the safety of the French outpost in the Moroccan desert. Their dashing, daredevil leader is the mysterious "Red Shadow". Margot Bonvalet, a lovely, sassy French girl, is soon to be married at the fort to Birabeau's right-hand man, Captain Fontaine. Birabeau's son Pierre, in reality the Red Shadow, loves Margot, but pretends to be a milksop to preserve his secret identity. Brooks (William Norton Bailey), a publisher and his publicist (Lee Moran) decide to boost the sales of a wartime book of flying experiences. They credit the book to popular author Robert Street (Edward Everett Horton), who is completely ignorant about aviation. Robert gets into all sorts of trouble in attempting to carry on the ruse, saving his friend's business but also attracting the attention of aviation-mad Grace Douglas (Patsy Ruth Miller). At first, he is able to carry out simple publicity events, but when he accidentally starts up an aircraft, his incredible aerobatics end with a landing in a haystack. When a race is staged between him and French ace Major Jules Gaillard (Armand Kaliz), it ends with Robert confessing he is no pilot, but still winning Grace's heart.

After his father brings disgrace on his family, Monte joins the Spanish–American War and goes with his regiment to the Philippines. Although he has a sweetheart back home, Claire Marsh, Monte is enlisted to romance a half-caste girl, Roma, who knows the whereabouts of the Philippine leader Emilio Aguinaldo. Monte must keep up the ruse, even when Claire comes to the islands to visit him.
