The Primal Lure est un film américain muet réalisé par William S. Hart et sorti en 1916.

Synopsis

Angus McConnell, chef du poste de traite de la Compagnie de la Baie d'Hudson, arrête Lois Le Moyne pour cambriolage, alors qu'en fait elle était entrée dans le poste pour lui offrir des mocassins. Plus tard, l'inspecteur de la compagnie Richard Sylvester arrive au poste et tombe immédiatement amoureux de Lois. En conséquence, il licencie Angus et libère Lois dans l'intention de l'épouser. Avant le mariage, une épidémie se déclare dans la région et Richard, de peur, s'enfuit. Les indiens, dans le but d'offrir un sacrifice humain pour calmer les dieux, attaquent le poste. Angus offre sa vie, mais avant qu'il soit mis sur le bûcher, une tempête éclate, et les indiens la considèrent comme un ordre des dieux de battre en retraite. Angus, libéré, réalise les sentiments qu'il a pour Lois et l'épouse.

As described in a film magazine, 'Silent' Budd Marr (Hart) comes to the town of Bakeoven to spend some of the gold for which he had labored so hard. Through Handsome Jack Pressley (McKim) he gets into a fight, and is confined to bed for a couple of weeks during which his claim is stolen. All efforts to regain his property are unsuccessful, so when he finds the claim jumpers loading their loot on the stage coach, he holds it up, and at the same time rescues Betty Bryce (Vale), a young woman Pressley had lured with the promise of marriage to work in his dance hall. As the girl learns the true nature of Pressley she is thankful and soon falls in love with Bud. A stranger known as Uncle Grubstake (Lockney) has become friendly with Bud and Betty's brother David (Goodwin), and when the citizens attempt to hang Bud for robbing the coach, Grubstake reveals his true identity as a federal agent, and has the evidence that gets Pressley and his gang arrested. Bud and Betty end up happy.

Tough lumberjack Blue Blazes Rawden takes up residence at the hotel of the equally tough Englishman, Ladyfingers Hilgard. Because Blue Blazes beats him at cards and steals the heart of his woman, Babette Du Fresne, Hilgard challenges Blue Blazes to a gunfight and is killed. Hilgard's mother and brother Eric soon visit the hotel, and Blue Blazes, touched by Mrs. Hilgard's gentle nature, tells her Hilgard died honorably. Babette, angry at Blue Blazes' inattention, tells Eric the truth, and Eric, enraged, shoots and seriously wounds Blue Blazes. After saving Eric from a lynch mob, Blue Blazes makes him promise never to tell Mrs. Hilgard what he knows and leaves town a reformed man.

As described in a film magazine, "Buck" Andrade (Hart), an outlaw, promises his dying mother (Midgley) that he will reform himself. Taking a letter of introduction from a wounded man, he becomes a detective for the railroad, which he had previously held up several times. He is successful in capturing several bandits and also wins the love of Faith Lawson (Vale), who is a towerman (a type of railroad signalman). When the real detective recovers from his wounds and returns to duty, he discloses the true identity of Buck. Buck attempts to escape, but an attack on the railroad by his old gang forces him to remain. After he captures all of them, president of the railroad Murray Lemantier (MacDowell) assists by allowing Buck to escape.
