The Outsider is a 1939 British drama film directed by Paul L. Stein and starring George Sanders, Mary Maguire and Barbara Blair. An osteopath cures one of his patients with whom he has fallen in love. It is a remake of the 1931 film The Outsider and was based on a play by Dorothy Brandon.

Synopsis

Anton Ragatzy is a infamous osteopath, known for his controversial methods of curing disability. Ragatzy uses a machine invented by himself which will either cure the patients permanently, or will leave them disabled forever.

Lea est une adolescente juive talentueuse qui vit dans le ghetto de Varsovie avec son père. Elle aime lire et rêve d'étudier la médecine à Saint-Pétersbourg pour guérir son père, mais il meurt brusquement et son tuteur, Ossip Storki, est appelé au loin pour travailler pour le gouverneur. Quand elle arrive en Russie, elle apprend que le seul travail autorisé pour les femmes juives est la prostitution, et qu'elles ne peuvent exercer cette activité qu'avec un passeport jaune. Elle demande un passeport jaune et s'installe dans un bordel. Elle pose sa candidature avec les papiers d'identité de sa sœur décédée et elle est acceptée, commençant à mener une double vie : universitaire le jour, prostituée la nuit. Ses camarades d'université s'en rendent compte, et, Lea fait une tentative de suicide, craignant la fin de sa carrière universitaire.

The calm of a peaceful English village is shattered when a series of anonymous letters starts being delivered to village homes, containing scurrilous allegations about the recipients and their families. Upstanding and respectable inhabitants find themselves and their loved ones accused in lascivious detail of all manner of moral, sexual and criminal misdeeds. The Reverend Rider (Tate) and his sister Mary (Robson) attempt to defuse the increasing consternation of the villagers by pointing out that the letters should be ignored as the malicious nonsense they are. The action takes place in Spain and Puerto Rico during the early 19th-century reign of Ferdinand VII. The Duchess of Arrogan (Irene Rich) is the victim of the machinations of court "climber" Countess Veya (Myrna Loy). The Countess arranges to hide the king's enemy, Duke Cordova (Forrest Stanley) in the Duchess's room where he is discovered resulting in the banishment of both to the colony of Puerto Rico, and the Duchess's estrangement from her powerful husband. In exile the Duchess successfully but cruelly manages her extensive land holdings, nursing bitterness against all men, while Cordova becomes the bandit El Blanco. The two are thrown together and begin an affair. The Duchess's daughter Laska (Florence Fair) arrives, fleeing an unwelcome marriage to which the death of her father has left her vulnerable. Laska is kidnapped and rescued. The Duchess has a happy resolution, reunited with her daughter and Cordova.
