Synopsis

Lorsque l'inspecteur de la police de New York arrête le faussaire Tony Brachieri lors de son mariage, ce dernier jure de se venger si jamais le policier se marie. Moran rencontre la mystérieuse Laura Bowers, mais n'envisage de l'épouser que lorsqu'il apprend que Brachieri a été tué lors d'une tentative d'évasion. Peu après l'emménagement des jeunes mariés, Roderick Moran est blessé grièvement par un coup de feu tiré à travers la fenêtre. La police est surprise lorsqu'elle découvre que la seule empreinte retrouvée est celle de Tony. Lorsque Roderick sort de l'hôpital, il apprend que sa femme était en fait membre des services secrets et qu'elle a attrapé le coupable : Calabrian Kid, la femme que Tony Brachieri était en train d'épouser lors de son arrestation.

A poor girl named Nancy (Olive Thomas) leaves to take care of her two younger sisters, Sadie (Ann Kroman) and Jane (Dolly Dare), while their father (Walter Perry), who is a former criminal, is sent to prison for a crime which he has not committed and dies there. At that time Jonathan Twist, a quaint philosopher and their somewhat mysterious neighbor who operates a watch repair shop and part-time fence, offers them help, and Nancy finds with his help a job as a seller of Cocoa Climax. Nancy marries with a British business man and peer Lord Cleveland, and she becomes Lady Cleveland. However, Lord Clevelend dies very soon without a will and . Nancy does not have enough income to keep up the estates of Lord Cleveland in England, which pass to his other relatives, but receives the palatial home in America. She manages to keep this home and its servants without any visible means of support, and during this time the activities of a crook called by the police "The Bird" is mystifying the authorities. On the night of a reception at her house there is a large diamond theft, and Jim Garside is detailed to catch The Bird. Jim discovers that Nancy is The Bird and Jonathan is her fence for the jewels she has taken, where much of the moneys have gone to the poor. Jim maintains her works for charity while she serves out her prison term, and in the end they are married.

When impoverished Nanette Roland refuses to marry Buck McDougall until she is convinced that her long-absent fiancé, Raoul Challoner, is dead, Buck obtains false evidence of Challoner's death and Nanette yields to his wishes. At their wedding ceremony, Raoul appears and is about to take Nanette away, when Buck attacks him and, in the ensuing battle, Raoul accidentally kills a man and is arrested. That night, Nanette helps him escape and, after a hasty wedding, they flee into the wilderness. Corporal O'Connor of the North-West Mounted Police is given the assignment of capturing him, and three years later, the Mountie, aided by Buck, discovers Raoul's cabin in the woods. Just as he arrests the fugitive, a forest fire breaks out, trapping Nanette, Raoul and their baby in the flames. O'Connor, injured by a fallen tree, is rescued by Raoul and the four reach safety, but Buck perishes in the fire. O'Connor, feeling a debt of gratitude, agrees to testify to Raoul's death and the family realizes that their troubles are at an end.
