It begins during the Burma campaign (although, curiously, the film starts with '1946' overlaid on the action), with three captured soldiers threatened with torture if they do not divulge military information to their Japanese captors. Two refuse and have their hands chopped off. Forward to post-War London and a gentleman of the night is found with his hand surgically removed and £500 in his pockets. Thus begins a criminal investigation seeking the perpetrator, returning the plot to the film's opening situation. This British B film is noted for its nightmarish premise and opening scene of horror that belies its censorship certificate. It is sometimes broadcast on the Freeview channel, movies4men.

Transylvanie, 1874. Dans la campagne désolée, des villageois s'apprêtent à mettre en terre le cadavre d'un homme accusé de vampirisme. L'un d'entre eux lui enfonce un pieu dans le cœur. Alors que tous se retirent, le fossoyeur l'enterre mais celui-ci est poignardé par Carl, le serviteur du mort. Avant d'être soupçonné d'être un vampire, ce dernier était un médecin qui avait trouvé le moyen de maintenir un corps privé de son cœur artificiellement en vie, durant une période infinie. Après avoir déterré le corps, Carl le ramène dans un endroit secret et demande à un docteur corrompu et alcoolique d'effectuer une greffe du cœur sur le prétendu mort. L'opération est un succès mais Carl tue le chirurgien pour ne laisser aucun témoin.

George Bird, un représentant célibataire sans famille ni ami, rend visite à son docteur pour un examen de routine et apprend qu'il est atteint de la maladie de Lampington, et qu'il ne lui reste donc plus que quelques semaines à vivre. Sur les conseils du docteur, il décide de profiter du peu qui lui reste à vivre et part vivre ses derniers jours dans un hôtel où réside une clientèle d'élite. Là-bas, son attitude désinvolte attise l'intérêt des résidents, qui cherchent à résoudre cette énigme, spéculant sur son identité, voire sur son appartenance à l'aristocratie. Seule une des femmes de ménage devine la vérité et Bird lui avoue son secret. Il se fait des amis, gagne de l'influence, tombe amoureux, répare des injustices, et on lui propose même des affaires lucratives. Mais tous ses succès ne font que lui rappeler l'ironie de sa situation.

The impecunious owner of a haunted Scottish castle has to juggle the advances of an American heiress who wishes to buy him out, the love of his longtime assistant who wants to marry him, and a Coal Board official who wishes to commandeer the estate. The British National Coal Board wants to annex the owner's castle as a group home for local miners and their families. Wealthy, much-married American Mrs. Clodfelter Dunne (Barbara Kelly) wants to claim the castle—and its owner, the Earl of Locharne (David Tomlinson)--for herself. Meanwhile, eccentric boarder Miss Nicholson (Margaret Rutherford) is obsessed with the idea that the Earl is actually the rightful King of Scotland. A composer discovers that inspiration for his greatest work may come at the expense of his marriage. Richard Wilder (Michael Dennison) was an RAF pilot in World War II whose plane was shot down over the Italian Dolomite Mountains. His life is saved by Alida (Valentina Cortese), a beautiful woman working with the anti-fascist resistance, who nurses Wilder back to health and with whom Wilder has an affair. She tells him a local legend about two lovers - one a ghost who leads her faithless partner to his doom over a mountain precipice on the Glass Mountain. When the war ends, Wilder returns to his English home and wife Ann (Dulcie Gray), and begins composing an opera based on the legend of Dolemite, the Glass Mountain, which has begun to haunt him. His English home however, does not prove conducive to creativity, so he returns to the source of his inspiration, to Italy, and to Alida, and is able to successfully complete his work. But he has fallen in love with Alida, and with the triumph of his opera in Venice, must now choose between his muse and his wife, as the mythical and modern levels of the legend of the Glass Mountain coincide.
