The Devil's Bait is an extant 1917 dramatic silent feature film starring Ruth Roland, an actress usually associated with serials. It was directed by Harry Harvey and produced by the Balboa Amusement Producing Company. General Film Company handled the distribution.

Future director Henry King, still an actor at this time, appears as a supporting player in the film.
This movie exists in the Library of Congress collection.

Hamilton Hill rencontre Estelle Redding dans un atelier de réparation de parapluies. Peu après, il la sauve d'une attaque par deux voyous. En fait, Estelle a caché dans le manche de son parasol la formule d'un produit qui pourrait remplacer le charbon. Edward Burnham, un des voyous, dit à Hamilton qu'Estelle est un espionne allemande, mais le jeune homme ne croit pas à cette histoire. Estelle confie le parasol à Hamilton, mais quand Burnham, qui s'avère être le frère d'Estelle, arrive à le récupérer, ils découvrent tous deux que la formule n'y est plus. Deux agents allemands, qui se font passer pour des agents du gouvernement, réussissent presque à obtenir la formule, mais Hamilton, accompagné de Burnham, qui a changé de camp, arrivent à temps pour la sauver. Finalement la formule est transmise au gouvernement américain, et Hamilton et Estelle peuvent penser à des choses plus romantiques.

Pour aider sa mère, Margaret se marie avec Richard Harding, bien qu'elle aime en réalité Geoffrey Morton. Cinq ans plus tard, les Harding ont un fils, mais Richard croit que ce n'est pas le sien. Il a rendu la vie presque insupportable à Margaret et elle ne vit plus que pour son enfant. Morton, de retour après une absence de deux ans, apprend qu'Harding a porté de fausses accusations contre lui et se rend chez lui pour demander qu'il se rétracte. Sur place, il est témoin de la cruauté d'Harding qui fouette son fils. Après le départ de Morton, Harding menace de frapper à nouveau l'enfant et Margaret menace en retour de le tuer s'il le fait. Harding défie Margaret, mais elle met sa menace à exécution. Le secrétaire d'Harding et Margaret placent le revolver de telle façon que l'on puisse croire à un suicide, mais la police n'est pas convaincue. Toutefois, l'inspecteur de police a compris le motif de ce qu'a fait Margaret et détruit la preuve qui la condamnait. Au tribunal, la mort est déclarée accidentelle et Margaret est libre de commencer une nouvelle vie.

As described in a film magazine, New York reporter Betsy Thorne (Bennett) travels to the railroad station in a Southern state to investigate a missing man where she overhears a conversation between the sheriff and an imported detective that reporters are barred from the house and grounds where the mystery has taken place. By good fortune she comes across a maid sent to the house from Richmond, and so frightens her that she gains a chance to act in her place. She finds an extraordinary set of affairs at the house, and during the first night is nearly terrified out of her senses when, hiding in the chapel, she sees a ghostly figure come from the grand organ. The house is roused by her screams as she flees the room, and she is forbidden from going back there by the sister of the missing man. During the following night she is locked in her room during a thunderstorm, and while escaping through a window sees the ghostly figure again in the family graveyard. She enlists the aid of an old black man and, both badly scared, make an investigation which starts from a particular chord played at the grand organ. They find that certain keys cause a secret door in the organ to open, revealing a secret passage to a family tomb. There she discovers two expert crooks and solves a mystery that has baffled the detectives, laying bare the scheme to extort a young man accused of the crime whom she has become deeply interested.
