The Chess Set is a 2005 Australian short subject depicting two old men Stuart Wagstaff and Frank Wilson who enjoy their daily chess game in a park. One day a young stranger (Nathaniel Dean) joins them to watch their game, leaving his blood on one of the men. Grief soon follows, but turns to hope.
Frank Wilson won the award for Best Actor at the New York International Independent Film and Video Festival but died the next day.

Jack Simpson is a wise-cracking, directionless layabout who works at an inner-city telemarketing firm. For years, he has been a member at the Cityside Lawn Bowls Club (in fact he has three memberships). But he has never played a single game, having only joined to get the free parking spaces from which he makes extra cash by renting them to his work-mates. But Cityside is in dire financial trouble and a greedy developer, Bernie Fowler, wants to turn it into a soul-less pokies venue. The Club President, Len, decides that all existing members must now play and Jack reluctantly has to turn up on Saturdays to take part in the bowling matches. Jack proves to be a natural player but he soon annoys and upsets the older club members with his brashness and lack of tact. Veteran player Stan, sensing that Jack only needs some guidance, both in the game and in life, takes him under his wing, trying to teach him to think of other people apart from himself.

The film explores the way in which business tore up the loyalty that was between Grub's club and family. Essentially this is a metaphor for the way in which business began to imprint the game of Rugby League during the 1980s, and saw the rise of commercialism in the game. Consequently, Grub must battle with an administration that wanted him gone and additionally his brother and coach's betrayal. The film also deals with the domestic issues between Grub and his wife and his children, as their husband and father has been transformed from who he was to who he has become.

Le champion du monde d'échecs, Mirko Czentovic (joué par Mario Adorf) se rend par bateau à un grand tournoi auquel il doit prendre part. Cependant, le départ de celui-ci est retardé car un mystérieux passager n'est pas encore monté à bord. Pendant le voyage, plusieurs passagers proposent une partie d'échecs au maître, qui finit par accepter, plutôt à contrecœur et après avoir négocié de l'argent pour chaque partie. Sans surprise, les opposants de Czentovic se retrouvent très rapidement en difficulté, bien que jouant à plusieurs. C'est à ce moment que le mystérieux passager fait son entrée, intervenant dans la partie pour aider le petit groupe. Pour la première fois, le champion commence à marquer un intérêt certain pour la partie et plus particulièrement pour cet homme, qu'il est certain de n'avoir jamais rencontré dans aucun tournoi important malgré un niveau de jeu comparable au sien.
