For his musical score Angelo Branduardi won the David di Donatello for best score and the Silver Ribbon in the same category.

Rome, 1825. Cornacchia, a shoemaker, finds out that prince Filippo Spada, a Carbonari associate, is going to reveal the organization's plans for an uprising to the Pontifical Guard's commander, Colonel Nardoni. He then goes off to warn his friend Leonida Montanari, a doctor and head of the conspirators, who decides to take out the informer. He and Angelo Targhini, a newcomer from the Duchy of Modena, attempt to murder Spada but ultimately fail to deliver the final blow. Spada manages to survive the attack and report his assailants to the police, having them both arrested and subsequently, after a summary judgement, sentenced to death by Cardinal Rivarola.

Rome, 1867. Rien ne va plus dans la Ville éternelle. Le mouvement libéral conteste le pouvoir temporel du Pape, souverain du centre de la péninsule italienne. Giuseppe Garibaldi et ses Chemises rouges envahissent Rome pour la libérer de l'emprise des États pontificaux soutenus par les troupes françaises envoyées par Napoléon III. La caserne Serristori est également la cible d'un attentat qui tue 23 zouaves pontificaux. Trois jeunes révolutionnaires, Giuseppe Monti, Gaetano Tognetti et Cesare Costa, sont arrêtés et accusés du massacre. La comtesse Flaminia, mère secrète de Cesare Costa, demande l'aide du cardinal Colombo da Priverno, prêtre-juge au tribunal du Vatican, qui s'apprêtait à donner sa démission. Pour le convaincre de l'épauler, elle lui annonce qu'il est le père de Cesare, né d'une relation éphémère. Dégoûté par l'évolution de l’Église, Don Colombo prend la parole de son procès pour le défendre. Césare est finalement libéré et Colombo le cache chez lui avec sa fiancée Teresa.
