Ce film met en vedette les acteurs principaux Shashi Kapoor (Rajeev) et Zeenat Aman (Roopa). Il s'agit d'un film dramatique social traitant sur les différences entre l'amour physique et spirituel.
La chanson titre Satyam Shivam Sundaram, interprétée par Lata Mangeshkar, est la chanson la plus connue du film.
Synopsis
Roopa (Zeenat Aman) est une jeune femme à la beauté unique cependant rejetée par tous les gens de son village, ces derniers la croyant maudite (et pouvant porter malheur) après que sa mère est morte en la mettant au monde. Elle vit avec sa seule famille qui est son père, le curé du village, et son oncle très proche d'elle contrairement à son père, qui n'a jamais voulu fêter l'anniversaire de sa fille depuis la mort de sa femme.Acteurs

Ganga lives in Gangotri with her brother, Karam. One day she comes to the assistance of a young man, Narendra Sahay, who has come with a group of Calcutta-based college students to study the source of the holy river Ganga, and to get some holy water for his wheelchair-bound paternal grandmother. Both are attracted to each other, and on the next Puran Mashi get married, and spend the night together. Narendra leaves, but promises Ganga that he will be back soon. Months go by, but he does not return. She gives birth to a son, and as soon as she is able to, she starts her journey to Alipor, Calcutta, to confront Narendra and ensure a better future for their son. At Rishikesh she is exploited by two women and a man from whom she escapes and takes shelter in a crematorium. Then at Banaras, she is molested by a Pandit, rescued by the police and given a ticket to Calcutta. When she alights en route to get water for her baby, the train leaves, and she falls into the clutches of Manilal who feigns blindness and lures her to a brothel near Banaras, where she is forced to stay so that she can provide for her son. It is here that she is introduced to powerful politician, Bhagwat Choudhary, who pays a hefty sum and asks Manilal to bring Ganga to Calcutta where he intends to keep her as his and Jeeva Sahay's mistress. What Ganga does not know is that Bhagwat's daughter, Radha, is Narendra's bride-to-be; that Jeeva is none other than Narendra's father, and that soon she will be asked to dance at his wedding reception.

Judge Raghunath is a wealthy district judge who convicts Jagga, a man whose father was a criminal, of rape on little evidence. The judge believes that "good people are born to good people, and criminals are born to criminals." Jagga later escapes and kidnaps the judge's wife Leela for revenge. When he finds out that she has just become pregnant, he releases her after four days and plans a different kind of revenge. The judge suspects that Leela was unfaithful to him with Jagga, and throws her out of the house.

Le juge Raghunath est un juge riche de district qui juge Jagga, un homme dont le père était un criminel, de viol sur peu de preuves. Kewal (Raj Kapoor) reluctantly accepts his father (Kamal Kapoor)'s demands to continue the family tradition by studying law and become a successful lawyer just like him. However, due to a lack of interest in becoming a lawyer and more interest in opening up his own theatre company, he fails his law exams and is thrown out of the house by his father.
