Buenos Aires, en 1930. Evaristo se prépare à rejoindre son travail en compagnie de deux de ses collègues. Mais, sa fille, Mary, est retenue au lit par une forte fièvre. Elle affirme à son père qu'elle a déjà élu un époux. L'été venue, elle revoit son passager. Il s'appelle Cholo, travaille dans une entreprise de conditionnement de la viande et pratique également la boxe. Ils sont irrésistiblement attirés l'un vers l'autre. Mais, Mary résiste à son empressement et souhaite demeurer vierge jusqu'au mariage religieux.

The film opens on Martín Santomé's (Héctor Alterio) 49th birthday, a widower and the father of three children: the eldest, the embittered Esteban (Luis Brandoni); the caring middle-child Blanca (Marilina Ross) and Jaime (Oscar Martínez), a closeted homosexual. He goes to work thinking they have forgotten his birthday, and once at the office, he assigns two new employees to their jobs: the effeminate, nervous Santini (Antonio Gasalla) and the young Laura (Ana María Picchio), with whom he soon develops a bond. Back home, Martín is surprised with a party thrown by his children.

Nazareno Cruz is a young farmer living in a rural town. He is known for being the seventh son of his father, and so he is seen by the locals as the victim of the werewolf curse. Despite this he lives happily in the community. When Nazareno is about to turn 18 he meets Griselda and they both fall in love. Soon after, "Mandinga" (the Devil) presents himself to Nazareno and explains that his curse is real. Mandinga makes Nazareno a proposition: if Nazareno gives up his love, he will receive in exchange his freedom and many riches. Nazareno refuses the deal and eventually turns into a werewolf, becoming involved in a series of tragedies.
