Synopsis
En 1943, dans l'Italie bouleversée par la guerre, Mimmo Adami (Alberto Sordi) et sa femme Dea Dani (Monica Vitti) gèrent une moyenne compagnie de théâtre populaire, qui doit s'adapter à travailler dans la province la plus reculée. Après l'armistice de Cassibile, l'Italie reste divisée, la partie Nord étant occupée par l'armée nazi-fasciste. Mimmo et Dea se trouvent alors dans les Abruzzes, et grâce à l'intervention de l'actrice - qui s'offre à un fédéral fasciste à l'insu de son mari - les hommes de la compagnie ne sont pas traduits en Allemagne, mais tous les acteurs sont envoyés à Venise travailler pour la République sociale italienne.Acteurs

Dans l'Italie médiévale, le chevalier Brancaleone dirige une petite compagnie sur le chemin des croisades. Ils atteignent un rivage, traversent et croient avoir traversé l'océan, mais les eaux se révèlent n'être qu'un petit lac. Sans se décourager, ils passent à autre chose. Les partisans d'un pape nouvellement élu abattent la presque totalité des troupes de Brancaleone, considérés comme hérétiques et les enterrent à l'envers. Il fait partie des rares survivants et la mort personnifiée par un personnage à la Bergman lui accorde un sursis afin qu'il puisse mourir dignement. Il reprend chemin et empêche un guerrier allemand de noyer un bébé dans un panier. L'enfant est le fils du roi, que son frère Turon voulait renverser et éliminer le successeur. L'Allemand intègre l'équipe de Brancaleone, il sauve ensuite la sorcière Tiburzia du bûcher, puis la troupe fait la rencontre d'une lépreuse couverte de bandelettes et de clochettes. Brancaleone doit ensuite arbitrer la rivalité entre les papes Grégoire et Clément, pour ce faire, Brancaleone doit marcher sur un chemin de braises. Il le fait mais pour se soulager de ses brûlures au pied, il se jette dans un fleuve alors qu'il ne sait pas nager, il est sauvé par le lépreux qui se révèle être Berthe d'Avignon, charmante aristocrate, qui lasse de se faire violer par tout le monde a choisi ce déguisement. Son apparition réveille la jalousie de Tiburzia, la sorcière. A Jérusalem, le roi reprend son fils, et Tiburzia doit prouver qu'elle est bien une sorcière. La situation militaire est dans l'impasse. Le roi des Maures suggère un combat cinq à cinq, le vainqueur devant décider de la vie et de la mort des vaincus. A la dernière seconde, Brancaleone est sur le point de gagner le combat, mais Tiburzia lui fait tomber une noix de coco sur le crâne à l'aide de sa sorcellerie, par jalousie en raison de ses projets de mariage avec Berthe. Les chrétiens sont exterminés, et Brancaleone échappe à la mort uniquement parce que Tiburzia se sacrifie par amour pour lui.

Dante Fontana is an antique dealer of Perugia, and is infatuated with British culture. But he is always thwarted by his wife and relatives, who see him as a silly dreamer who gets lost in stories rather than doing serious work. But Dante does not lose hope, and plans a vacation to London to learn more about the habits of the British so much that make him mad. After taking part in a fox hunt, Dante is invited by a rich English nobleman who shows him an ancient Etruscan statuette. Dante says that the object is a fake and shatters it. Then chased away by gunfire, Dante takes refuge with a group of young flower children and with them, takes part in a riot. Arrested, Dante is sent back to Italy where he resumes his monotonous work.

The film is divided into four episodes. In the first Giacinto and his wife decide to celebrate their wedding anniversary by watching a movie at the cinema. However, the period in which they live is dotted by the deployment of a large number of pornographic films and the two, being simpletons, run into a projection at red lights. In the second episode a boy to become a famous journalist and writer, must have a sexual relationship with his director and morbid. In the third episode a woman, Armida, is struggling with the pornographic magazines, with the risk of compromising his family relationship. In the last episode the crude and vulgar producer Giuseppe Costanzo is releasing his latest movie-themed sex. But the girl who must interpret the "deflowered" by the young actor suddenly decides to run away leaving the production to violence. Joseph did not do more and is enraged to death. Of all the attempts to reconcile the relationship with the actress, but everything is useless. Then a friend advised him to take an alternate ending for the film and equally seductive emorivamente that will involve the entire audience during the first cinema.
