After Italy surrendered to the Allies, he took refuge in the Spanish Embassy. Aware of the threat to Jews, he first began to help them find shelter in Spanish safe houses.
After the Spanish ambassador moved to Switzerland, Perlasca posed as the Spanish consul, tricking Nazi officials and saving the lives of more than 5,000 Jews in Hungary in 1944 during the Holocaust. The film was made by Rai Uno and aired as a two-part TV film. The Village Voice deemed this account as "more courageous than Spielberg."
Synopsis
The film starts in a Budapest Hotel with a narrative introduction by Perlasca. His chambermaid warns him of a raid of Hungarian Arrow Cross storm troopers coming to arrest him. He escapes and manages gets to the railway station, where he tries to sneak onto a sheep transport wagon. Discovered by a local officer named Glückmar he is arrested (as Italy has surrendered to the Alllies, Italian citizens in Hungary are considered enemies). While he is being taken away, an Allied air strike hits the station and Perlasca escapes.Acteurs

The movie starts off with Mussolini arriving in a small town in 1901 and getting a job as a school teacher; he is subsequently fired for having sex with the headmaster's daughter. This would be a common theme throughout the movie. After giving up on teaching, he works as a builder on the new University of Geneva campus building, and where a lover persuades him to become a student. This is also where he organizes his first protest after the death of a worker he knew. For this, he is nearly deported but is saved by Angelica's intervention. After getting run out of then-Austro-Hungarian Trieste, he goes back to his hometown of Forlì, where he marries Rachele. Soon he is at the forefront of the Socialist movement when he becomes the editor-in-chief of Avanti!. At this point Mussolini unites the "reds," the Socialists, with the "yellows," the Republicans in an anti-war movement. This marks the peak of his power, with the Italian left-wing politics under his control. However, he gradually loses his anti-war fervor and splits from the Socialist party altogether, turning all his allies into enemies.

Le film commence en montrant l’évasion de trois prisonniers du camp d’extermination de Sobibór : ils passent sous la clôture et traversent un champ de mines. Impossible de savoir s’ils en sortiront vivants car ils disparaissent derrière le nuage de poussière causé par l’explosion des mines. Ensuite des trains roulent vers le camp d’extermination et, à leur arrivée les Juifs déportés sont accueillis par les SS avec musique et hautparleurs. On sélectionne alors ceux qui sont capables de travailler, les autres sont envoyés dans les chambres à gaz après qu’on leur a dit qu’ils sont dans un camp de travail et qu’on les traitera bien. Luka (Joanna Pacula) est retenue avant d’être envoyée dans les chambres à gaz parce qu’elle prétend être couturière ; Stanisław Szmajzner (Simon Gregor) échappe aussi à la mort après avoir montré à Karl Frenzel (Kurt Raab) que sa valise contient des outils, ce qui prouve qu’il est orfèvre. Il sauve aussi sans le savoir son frère qu’il présente comme son assistant. Ce n’est que quelques jours plus tard que les deux frères se rendent compte que le reste de leur famille, comme la plupart de ceux qui étaient dans les trains, ont été dès le premier jour assassinés dans la chambre à gaz puis incinérés. Se présentant comme couturière, une femme avec son bébé parvient et à le cacher un certain temps dans la baraque du tailleur. Cependant, le SS Gustav Wagner les découvre. Il tire d’abord sur elle, puis abat l’enfant.

Situé à l'époque de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, le film décrit la vie du principal protagoniste, Pasqualino, un minable mafieux, fanfaron, mais qui se révèle le dernier des lâches, un pleutre ignoble quand, déserteur de l'armée italienne parachuté en Allemagne, il est capturé par l'armée allemande et envoyé dans un camp de concentration. Pour sauver sa peau, il multiplie les actes de lâcheté et tente de séduire l'énorme matrone (Shirley Stoler) qui par ailleurs le méprise. Une fois libéré, il regagne l'Italie et son personnage d'avant-guerre. Le film fait appel à de nombreux flashbacks, qui aident à brosser un tableau peu flatteur d'un prototype de macho : petit tyran domestique se révélant infâme couillon face à plus fort que lui.

The film opens in 1939 Czechoslovakia. Horst, a Czech-German Nazi collaborator married to a German woman and co-worker of Josef, brings food to the invalid Josef and his wife Marie, who are Czechs. Josef hates the Nazis. When Josef finds David, who had escaped a concentration camp in occupied Poland after first being sent to the Theresienstadt concentration camp in northern Bohemia, Josef and Marie decide to hide him in their apartment. Horst makes an unannounced visit, bringing presents as usual. Marie is ambivalent about their secret: On one hand she never misses an opportunity to blame her husband for bringing in the Jew, but on the other she is merciful and sympathetic with the poor kid locked in the closet day and night. She suggests that Josef accepts Horst's job offer evicting Czech Jews from their homes, so as to get more protection and deflect possible suspicions. Josef accepts and is considered a collaborator by the neighbor Franta (who had tried to give David over to the Nazi authorities, when he first escaped from a concentration camp). Marie spends the days learning French from David and getting more and more tender toward him. Horst's visits become more frequent, and one afternoon, he attempts to rape Marie.
