Pays d'octobre (titre original : Mississippi Blues) est un film documentaire franco-américain coréalisé par Bertrand Tavernier et Robert Parrish et sorti en 1983.

Synopsis

Un reportage dans le Sud des États-Unis. Une expérience humaine et musicale scellée par une amitié forgée dès les années 1960 entre deux hommes de cinéma : l'un français et l'autre américain. « Il est des pays que l'on a déjà tellement exploré dans ses rêves, à travers des films et des livres, que s'y rendre tient tout à la fois du pèlerinage et de la découverte. Le Sud des États-Unis par exemple », murmure, en voix off, Bertrand Tavernier, à l'orée de cet émouvant voyage.

The movie follows the lives of a family of belly dancers living in a small Egyptian neighborhood in Cairo. Reda is the matriarch of the family who passes down her knowledge of the art of belly dancing to each of her children. Her husband died more than a year prior to the making of the documentary, so the viewer sees her in a state of mourning and uncertainty. She represents the authoritative figure, but her seven children often test the boundaries of her power. Each of her children contributes to the family profession through performing at local events, learning the trade during the day, or in the case of her younger son, watching the process of knowledge transition from generation to generation. Only three of her daughters currently perform, typically for all-male audiences. The documentary follows their journeys, from their household to the stage.

The documentary film follows footage filmed by Jessica Grace Mellor, an amateur director and photographer who filmed footage of the band during their early days in 2002, in an attempt to secure them a record deal with a major label. At the time, band members Dappy, Tulisa and Fazer were fourteen, thirteen and fifteen respectively, and had begun working with Garage producer Donna Dee, who helped them create some of their very first tracks, and perform some of their first gigs, and is the person who requested that Grace Mellor film some footage of the band. Footage included in the film includes the band working with Dappy's father and Tulisa's uncle, Byron, performing and mixing material in the studio, as well as interviews with some of the band's label colleagues and well known friends, including Wretch 32, J2K and Angel. The film concludes with a short discussion on the height of the British music industry, and how the band contributed to making the British hip-hop scene better known.
