The Matchmaker (Hebrew: פעם הייתי‎, lit. "Once I Was") is a 2010 Israeli film written, directed and produced by Avi Nesher, based on the novel When Heroes Fly by award-winning author Amir Gutfreund. It premiered as an official selection at the 2010 Toronto International Film Festival and later that year won the Silver Plaque award at the Chicago International Film Festival. It received seven nominations for Israel’s Ophir Awards in 2010, including Best Picture, where Adir Miller also won in the Best Actor category and Maya Dagan won in the Best Actress category.

The film takes place in 1968. An army entertainment troupe (based on the Nahal troupe), perform comedy and singing acts to the Israeli soldiers in combat zones to boost morale. At the beginning of the film, three departing members of the troupe perform an old Broadway-style song. Mai 1948, à deux semaines de la fin du Mandat des Britanniques en Palestine, Juifs et Arabes s'affrontent. L'Etat israélien n'est pas encore une réalité. Ils arrivent dans un campement improvisé, non loin de Jérusalem assiégée. Mais la route est encore longue et l'hostilité arabe forte. Contraints de prendre les armes pour prêter main forte aux combattants juifs, les immigrants engagent une bataille sanglante contre les habitants d'un village arabe fortifié.
