Naagarahaavu (Kannada: ನಾಗರಹಾವು, English: Cobra) is a 1972 Indian Kannada language film directed by Puttanna Kanagal, based on T. R. Subba Rao's three novels Nagarahavu, Ondu Gandu Eradu Hennu and Sarpa Mathsara, and starring Vishnuvardhan, Aarathi, K. S. Ashwath in lead roles. The supporting cast features Leelavathi, Ambrish, Shivaram, Dheerendra Gopal, Lokanath and Vajramuni. This is the 1st Kannada movie to complete 100 days in 3 centres.

The film was a huge success and paved way for the stardom of Vishnuvardhan and Ambarish who eventually morphed as leading actors in Kannada cinema. Over a period of time the initially less noticed character roles of Leelavathi, Dheerendra Gopal, Loknath, Lakshmi Devi have come in for their share of applause.

The film is about the teacher who miserably fails in blending his daily educative chores on society interfering philosophically in guiding a tough lad. Although Vishnuvardhan's character cannot be called a Cobra (having venom) but he is too tough a guy who doesn't listen to anybody but has an obvious anger towards the age old caste system and inefficiency of urban society in holding up culture which makes his first love a prostitute under a corrupt husband . At the climax the deaths of Chamayya and Ramachari are also portrayed magnificently on a hill.

The conversation between the Guru (Chamayya) and Shishya (Ramachari) is the highlight of movie all through. They both efficiently portray their parts with high energy and confidence. Although the student seems to be subdue under master's advice at the end master gets defeated by his beliefs towards society. Probably the society is the silent rhetoric for the title of the movie which spreads venom - a cobra.

Arathi is affianced to a guy who is visiting the United States. Being thus a de facto daughter-in-law, she assumes the role and practically lives with her in-laws. However when her fiance returns, she finds out that he has married Alicia, a "white woman", and is no longer interested in her. The rest of the story mostly revolves around how Alicia wins over all and sundry with her agreeable character and willingness to meld and melt into Indian society. Arathi assumes a larger-than-life good samaritan character, which is presumably the very antithesis of a jilted lover.

Desperate for an offspring, Srinath turns to Aarathi and she promptly begets a child. The movie begins with Sanskrit saying, 'Kaamaaturaanam nabhayam nalajja (A lustful person knows neither fear nor shame),' and the rest of the movie attempts to illustrate the same. Kama is one of the six moral weaknesses: kama (passion/lust), krodha (anger), lobha (greed), moha (attachment), madha (pride) and matsara (envy).
