Mandi (Hindi: मंडी, translation: Market Place) is a 1983 Urdu movie starring Shabana Azmi.

The film is a satirical comedy on politics and prostitution, and stars Shabana Azmi, Naseeruddin Shah and Smita Patil. Based on a classic Urdu short story Aanandi by writer Ghulam Abbas, the film narrates the story of a brothel, situated in the heart of a city, an area that some politicians want for its prime locality.

The film won the 1984 National Film Award for Best Art Direction for Nitish Roy. It was selected at Indian Panorama at Filmostav, Bombay 1984, and was invited to the Los Angeles Exposition (FILMEX), the Hong Kong International Film Festival 1984, and London Film Festival 1983.

Synopsis

For years an aging Rukmini Bai (Shabana Azmi) has been the Madame of a brothel in Hyderabad, India. One day she gets the news that she now has a new landlord in Mr. Gupta (Kulbhushan Kharbanda), whose daughter is to marry the mayor's son Sushil, shortly. Led by City Councillor, Shantidevi, the people in this town demand that this brothel be moved elsewhere, preferably on the outskirts of the town, and they do succeed, compelling Rukmini to move with her women to their new location, which happens to be near the Dargah of Baba Karak Shah. Ironically, this attracts a lot of people, and the patronage to Rukmini's bordello increases. Then complications set in when Sushil refuses to marry his father's choice, childlike Malti, and wants to marry Zeenat (Smita Patil) - a prostitute, not entirely by choice and seeking for a better existence, who resides with Rukmini.

Le docteur Rao (Girish Karnad), un vétérinaire, vient fonder une coopérative laitière dans un village où les producteurs de lait sont en majorité des dalits (intouchables). Il doit faire face à Mishraji (Amrish Puri), qui achète à bas prix le lait de tous les villageois, mais aussi au chef du village (Kulbhushan Kharbanda) qui souhaite utiliser la coopérative naissante pour renforcer son pouvoir. Rao s'aperçoit vite qu'il a besoin du soutien de la population dalit pour réussir son entreprise. Bindu (Smita Patil), une femme de caractère appartenant à cette communauté, sympathise avec lui et accepte d'y participer, entrainant avec elle les autres femmes. Mais Bhola, dont la forte personnalité fait le leader de la communauté, reste sur ses gardes. Sa méfiance s'aggrave lorsqu'il découvre qu'un des associés de Rao a une aventure avec une femme de sa caste. Lorsque Rao finit par convaincre Bhola, l'ensemble du village se rallie à sa cause et des élections sont organisées pour désigner le président de la coopérative. Le vainqueur est un dalit. Mais le chef du village n'accepte pas cette remise en cause de son pouvoir. Il trouve un allié en la personne de Mishraji dont l'entreprise est menacée par le développement de la coopérative. Mishraji parvient à convaincre Bindu, en grande difficulté financière, de prétendre que Rao l'a séduite. Rao et son équipe doivent quitter le village, mais la coopérative ne périclite pas pour autant : les producteurs de lait continuent son œuvre.

Pooja (Shabana Azmi), who grew up as an orphan girl and always dreamt of owning a house, becomes insecure when she finds out that she and her husband, Inder (Kulbhushan Kharbanda), have to leave the apartment they rent. The twist that occurred when Inder gives her the keys of a new house proves to be double-edged, when it is revealed that he is in love with another woman, Kavita (Smita Patil), with whom he earned the money (in the film industry) for the new apartment. She is helped by Raj (Raj Kiran) to surpass the difficulties of life as a single person, to find a job and to rely morally on herself. Raj and Pooja become good friends. Gradually, Kavita's mental instability deepens her fears of insecurity, even after Inder requests Pooja to sign the divorce papers.

The story is set around the Indian Mutiny of 1857. Javed Khan (Shashi Kapoor) is a feckless feudal chieftain with a Muslim Pathan heritage, whose world revolves around breeding carrier pigeons. His younger brother-in-law, Sarfaraz Khan (Naseeruddin Shah) is politically awakened and actively plots the fight against the British. Freedom fighters attack the local British administrators while they are in Sunday Worship at Church, massacring them all. Miriam Labadoor, Jennifer Kendal) manages to escape with her daughter, Ruth (Nafisa Ali) and mother. The three women seek refuge with the wealthy Hindu family of Lala Ramjimal (Kulbhushan Kharbanda). Lala is torn between his loyalty for India and his privileged position under the British. However, matters are taken out of his hand by Javed Khan who barges into Lala's house and forcibly takes Ruth and her family to his own house. This leads to jealousy on part of his wife, Firdaus (Shabana Azmi) and anger on part of his brother, who ultimately gives in to the Pathan tradition of offering hospitality and sanctuary (Nanawatai) even to uninvited guests. Various situations ensue due to cultural misunderstandings in the domestic routine of the Muslim household with its new English guests. Javed falls in love with Ruth, and wants to marry her but is opposed bitterly by her mother. Noticing intense feelings of Javed for her daughter Ruth, Miriam Labadoor (mother) cleverly makes an agreement with Javed that she would only give her daughter’s hand to Javed if British were defeated. At first instance, Javed is hesitant but accepts the offer when again Miriam asks him if he has misgivings in his war against the British. There are simmerings of a love affair under the watchful suspicious eyes of Firdaus.
