It was awarded the 2012 National Film Award for Best Feature Film in English.
Synopsis
A renowned expert on cyclones J.A. Krishnamoorthy comes to India, when he learns that his daughter, Smriti, has met with a fatal freak accident. Determined to find out the truth behind his daughter’s accident, JAK starts to retrace his daughter’s path on the days that led to her accident in a small town in Tamil Nadu.Acteurs

Au Canada, l'écrivain Yann Martel écoute les confessions d'un Indien qui lui raconte l'histoire extraordinaire qu'il a vécue lorsqu'il était adolescent. Cet homme se nomme Piscine Molitor Patel (d'après la piscine Molitor) et est le fils du directeur d'un parc zoologique à Pondichéry. Durant son enfance, Piscine, qui était le souffre-douleur de son école à cause de son prénom, a décidé de se présenter comme étant « Pi ». Sa famille, ne pouvant plus tenir le zoo, décide de déménager au Canada et de vendre leurs animaux. Pour ce faire, ils embarquent à bord d'un cargo pour traverser l'océan Pacifique, mais celui-ci fait naufrage. Pi se retrouve à la dérive dans l'océan à bord d'un canot de sauvetage accompagné d'un zèbre, d'une hyène, d'un orang-outan, d'un rat et d'un tigre du Bengale appelé Richard Parker. La hyène, agressive, tue le zèbre, puis l'orang-outan. À son réveil, le tigre tue la hyène. Seul à bord avec Richard Parker, Pi va tout faire pour essayer de survivre et maintenir une bonne entente avec l'animal.

La tradition a toujours été respectée dans ce petit village du Gujarat, surtout par les femmes qui ne remettent pas en cause l'organisation patriarcale, voire franchement phallocrate, de cette société rurale. Rani, jeune veuve, négocie, avec son amie Lajjo, le mariage de son fils Gulab avec une jeune adolescente, Janaki. L'affaire est conclue. Quand les deux femmes reviennent à leur village, un conseil est réuni pour décider l'avenir d'une jeune fille qui fuit sa belle-famille parce que son mari la délaisse et que les autres hommes de la belle-famille abusent d'elle. Mais les anciens ne sauraient tolérer une telle infamie : il renvoie la jeune fille à son sort. Rani tente vainement, mais mollement de protester. Rani, Lajjo, questionnées, aiguillonnées par leur amie Bijli, prostituée et danseuse d'une sorte de cabaret, commencent à remettre en cause cet ordre moral qui interdit l'éducation et l'indépendance aux femmes. Le film se termine par la crémation symbolique du démon Rāvaṇa lors de la nuit de Dussehra commémorant la libération de Sītā par son époux Rāma, nuit au cours de laquelle périt par le feu Manoj, le mari alcoolique et violent de Lajjo. Puis les trois femmes partent sur le triporteur bariolé du cabaret, libres et sans but.

Upin, a veteran photo-journalist comes to Purulia in West Bengal to report on the violence against the poor tribal women in the impoverished region. There he comes across Gangor breast-feeding her child. He photographs her using one of the pictures for his news report. The picture triggers a backlash as she is shunned by the villagers. The policemen take her forcibly to the police station and gang rape her. In the meantime, Upin realizes his folly and haunted by the hushed-up violence travels back to Purulia to look for her. Gangor is no longer there and no one has her whereabouts. Determined to find her out Upin presses on his search and one night meets her, who has now become a prostitute. Gangor asks him to photograph her again taking off her blouse to reveals how her body was mutilated by the policemen during gang-rape. Upin runs away from her falling on the railway track and comes under the wheels of train. As the incident comes to the attention media, Gangor’s case reaches court. On the day of the hearing of her case, a group of tribal women led by activist Medha take off their blouses on the court premises to mark their protest against the police brutality.

It reveals the story behind the seemingly simple cat and mouse game between Amod Kanth and Charles. But more importantly, the movie gives the world a peek into the dangerous mind of Charles, how he led different people to perceive him differently, how he filled the vacuum in their lives and ultimately, his dark world where right and wrong blend into a charming and mystique grey existence.
