Synopsis
Incarcéré, dès l'âge de 13 ans, pour avoir assassiné son propre père, Bill Clark est libéré. Il vient de purger une peine de plus de 18 ans de prison. Civilement adulte, il est, en réalité, un nigaud qui ignore tout de la vie et de ses pièges. Après une expérience malheureuse, il erre dans New York et croise la route de Kay, taxi-girl dans un dancing. Il en tombe sincèrement amoureux et la raccompagne à son domicile. Là, il découvre qu'elle a une liaison avec un policier. Celui-ci prend d'ailleurs très mal la situation. Une bagarre s'ensuit qui tourne au désavantage de Bill. Ce dernier s'écroule, inconscient. À ce moment-là, Kay s'empare d'un revolver projeté à terre et abat le policier. Lorsque Bill reprend connaissance, la jeune femme le persuade qu'il est l'auteur d'un meurtre accidentel. Contraints de fuir, les deux amants rencontrent la famille Dawson qui se propose de les héberger chez eux à Salinas.Acteurs

Steve Morgan (Tierney) is a charming sociopath who has just robbed and killed a cinema cashier. Seeking to escape, he hitches a ride to Los Angeles with unsuspecting Jimmy 'Fergie' Ferguson (North). Part way the pair stops at a gas station and picks up two women. Encountering a roadblock, Morgan persuades the party to spend the night at an unoccupied beach house. The police close in as one by one Morgan begins killing the threesome.

Detective Ray Williams (Michael O'Shea) is recuperating from a broken rib as his wife Ann (Julie Bishop) tries to persuade him to get a desk job, especially with the new baby on the way. However, a call from the police inspector (Robert Shayne) informs him that homicidal criminal "Red" Kluger (who Williams apprehended) has busted out of Folsom Prison. As Williams is going to leave in his police car, he is kidnapped by Kluger (Charles McGraw) and his men. District attorney Barker MacDonald (Frank Conroy) is also kidnapped by his men. Lastly, nightclub singer Carol (Virginia Grey), who apparently ratted him out is kidnapped. She however claims it was Tony, one of Kluger's associates, who Red has arranged to come out of Mexico City to Palm Springs to give Red and his associates the $12,000 from a deposit box and give them an escape plane to leave the country out of. Kluger makes no secret of his plans to kill Williams and MacDonald once he's made a getaway. Carol claims to not have ratted him out constantly, but Kluger rejects her claims. Kluger also takes in another hostage, Joe Turner, driver of the truck escorting the gang. The gang is housed up at a shack, awaiting Tony. Joe tries to escape with a gun he had stolen from the truck earlier, but Kluger subdues him, takes the gun and kills him.

John Ireland stars in "The Basketball Fix" as Pete Ferreday, a sports writer for a local newspaper. Ferreday narrates the movie as if it's one of his articles.
