Surya (Ajith) has been brought up in the army barracks in Ooty, ever since his mother(Sukanya) handed him over as a baby to a brigadier (Nasser). She tells the officer the reason for her action but the audience is not allowed to hear it at this point. Surya grows up to be a patriotic youth and the best soldier in his class. He falls in love with Indu (Simran), the daughter of an army officer. Indu's parents accept her choice of husband but soon after, her father dies in a bomb blast while her mother loses her life on seeing her husband's body. Not wishing to lose her husband too in war, Indu asks Surya to choose between her and the army.

Vasanth (Vijay) is a son of a wealthy businessman and grows up with a possessive attitude. This is shown in one scene in a gift shop where he breaks a gift he likes solely because it had already been bought by someone else. He pays the owner to cover the damages, but he responds with a tagline - "If I can't get it, nobody can". He happens to visit Rajasthan, where he meets Priya (Kausalya) and falls in love immediately. Dhil is the story about Kanagavel (Vikram) whose only dream is to become a police officer. He succeeds in passing the exams and wins a girlfriend, Asha (Laila). One night after having dinner at a restaurant near the beach Velu goes to pay the bill leaving Asha behind. At that moment a corrupt police officer Shankar (Ashish Vidyarti) drinks and behaves indecently to Asha. He then attempts to assault her but is beaten up by Velu severely and receives a scar on his face. Angered by this he seeks revenge against Velu. The rest of the story shows how Velu fights Shankar and his goons finally killing the corrupt policeman.

The film starts in a courtroom where a Brahmin woman Janaki (Meena) is fighting for divorce from her husband Pandian (Kamal Haasan). She offers various reasons for wanting a divorce. She has married Pandian against the wishes of her rich father Vishwanathan Iyer (Gemini Ganesan). But she isn't able to come to terms with living in Pandian's small house without amenities. Pandian is an assistant dance director with a modest income and is not able to spend much time with the family. All this accumulates and Janaki decides to apply for divorce, which is granted. The court orders that Pandian can meet his daughter Barathi, once a week and this is his only solace. His daughter, however, loves him a lot and doesn't like the arrangement.

Rangan (Nasser) is a very ugly man and therefore lives a tough life. He is kicked out of jobs, ill-treated constantly, and the girl he loves hates him. (Think "The Elephant Man.")
