Dil Dosti Etc. explores the ambiguities of the youth years. The movie is about coming of age of Apurv (Imaad Shah), a rich, aimless and cynical 18-year-old young man, who has just entered college in Delhi. Juxtaposed against the aimlessness of Apurv is also the story of Sanjay Mishra (Shreyas Talpade), an ambitious Bihari student & politician with limited means. They represent two divergent world views—the liberal versus the conservative, the no-strings attached versus the committed, the elite versus the middle-class. Directionless and laidback, Apurv searches for meaning in life through amorous escapades with different girls, including a sex-worker Vaishali (Smriti Mishra) and a school girl Kintu (Ishita Sharma). Meanwhile Sanjay works single-mindedly to win the college Presidential elections, and yet catches the attention of a rich model Prerna (Nikita Anand). Dil Dosti Etc. is woven together with an ensemble of other characters, who have their own stories to tell. Set against all these is a silly wager that the two protagonists engage in. Sanjay will win the elections and Apurv will manage to have sex with three women in a day. As the film moves towards a volatile climax, you get to test the film’s premise, when you’re young, you believe the possibilities are endless.

The film opens with the elderly Ravi (Soumitra Chatterjee) driving to an abandoned carpet factory in West Bengal. As he explores the remains of the factory, he finds his bed and other memoirs. The story flashbacks to the early 1940s in pre-independent India, with Ravi Gupta (Sikandar Agarwal) a child laborer in the factory, saving up his earnings so that he can leave the factory one day. Ravi befriends a girl of his own age, Masha (Tumpa Das), who's been sold to the factory by her father. When the obstinate factory manager (Biplab Dasgupta) tries to sell Masha to a rich man, Ravi unsuccessfully tries to match the bid. He subsequently gives her the money to escape, and as they part Masha promises to wait for Ravi at every full moon at Calcutta's great Shiva temple.

Raja Mishra (Saif Ali Khan) gatecrashes into a marriage while trying to escape from a brawl. The bride's cousin, Rudra Tripathi (Jimmy Shergill), and Raja form a friendship upon Raja revealing that he is a uninvited guest. While in process of seducing the mujra dancer, Raja overhears a plot by Lallan Tiwari (Chunky Pandey) to execute everyone in the wedding upon instructions from a land lord wanting to use Rudra's uncle's land for poppy farming. Raja warns everyone about the impending attack and Raja and Rudra fight off the attacking Lallan Singh's gang. Rudra's uncle (Sharat Saxena) sees the potential in Raja and Rudra forming an alliance for offering protection to political personalities and offers them to join his gang. Not wanting to enter the world of politics, they refuse and Rudra's uncle advices them to take refuge from Lallan's gang in jail. In a later incident Rudra's uncle is killed by the poppy field owner with help of Lallan Singh.

Pitamber Kohli lives an upper middle class existence with his wife, & two brothers, Yeshwant and Pratap. The film takes place in Calcutta, 1971. The story begins with rehabilitation official Venu (Mohanlal) coming to Calcutta in one of his regular visits to shift about 35 to 40 refugee families to the Andaman Islands. The current rehabilitation plan is that only those who fall under the category of schedule caste farmers. People in Andaman, too, are not happy about taking in refugees. All the refugees have been staying in Permanent Liability Camp in Rana ghat, West Bengal for the past two decades. Experiencing the shattered lives of poor displaced people deeply hurts Venu in his silent moments alone in his small lodge room frequently finds himself lost in the thoughts about the lives of the refuge seekers he meets during the day. Living an oppressed life, their only hope being the occasional promises of land, cattle, and other grants by the bureaucratic state.
