Synopsis
Après que le Capitaine William Horatio Ambrose et son équipage ont reçu la prestigieuse médaille Lloyd's pour avoir secouru le H.M.S. Arabella, le capitaine promet de raconter son aventure à un journaliste, ce qu'il va faire en enjolivant un peu son passé.Acteurs

En 1940, le "San Demetrio", un pétrolier de la Marine marchande Anglaise, qui traverse l'Atlantique pour ravitailler les troupes Britanniques, est torpillé par l'ennemi et prend feu. Après avoir dérivé pendant trois jours dans un canot de sauvetage, l'équipage qui avait fuit le navire en flammes, constate que celui çi ne coule toujours pas. Les menbres de l'équipage décide alors de remonter à bord pour tenter de suffoquer l'incendie. Mais les sous-marins Allemands rôdent dans l'atlantique. Les hommes parviendront, au prix d'un immense courage, à sauver le bâtiment et à lui faire regagner les côtes Britanniques...

Johnny Brent (Fox), home from school during a scarlet fever outbreak, manages to con a younger boy out of a magnet by trading it for an "invisible watch". The other boy's nanny accuses Johnny of stealing, which makes Johnny feel guilty. He runs away from home. After an older boy uses the magnet to cheat at pinball and Johnny is implicated, Johnny tries to get rid of the magnet. He meets an eccentric iron lung maker who is raising funds for the local hospital, and gives him the magnet to be auctioned for charity. The iron lung maker tells the story of the magnet at various fund-raising events, exaggerating wildly and portraying Johnny as everything from a spoiled brat to a Dickensian ragamuffin.

The film is set between March 1939 and June 1940 in a small fishing port in Cornwall, whose inhabitants have a historic but largely benign rivalry with their counterparts from another port over the water in Brittany whose men fish the same grounds. Legally the French may not fish within three miles of the British coast, and vice versa, and alleged breaches of this rule are the cause of frequent spats between hot-headed Cornish harbour-master Nat Pomeroy (Tom Walls) and Lanec Florrie (Françoise Rosay), an equally redoubtable widow from the Breton port. Beneath all the bluster and posturing however, there is a mutual understanding and respect between the two communities.

An Italian submarine captain (Gabriele Ferzetti) tries to navigate his sub through enemy waters whilst being stalked by a British commander (James Mason). The Italian sub manages to make it into the neutral port of Tangiers, followed by the British commander. During their stay, the two captains agree not to fight. They come to respect each other. Eventually the Italian sub leaves port after the Captain accuses his lover (Lilli Palmer) of spying. The British commander follows, but ends up losing his ship to the Italian’s torpedoes.

Et dans une Irlande en pleine lutte d'indépendance Rosie va payer cher cet amour interdit.
