Synopsis
Commendatore Aristide Paoloni is a man all of a piece, strong and brave, who prides himself on saving lives. His specialty is to avoid drowning suicides that are thrown into the Tiber from the Milvian Bridge in Rome, and so one day Aristide saves the poor Gennaro. Gennaro, realizing the situation, pretends to Aristide Paoloni a job, but the man ignores him. So, Gennaro begins to disturb the quiet family life of the Commendatore, who soon begins to look for a way to kill the poor Gennaro.Acteurs

In 1922, during Fascism, Antonio La Quaglia accepts the assignment to the station master in a remote town called Piovarolo, because that's where it always rains. Antonio soon realizes that life in the small village is sad, because the inhabitants are all old, deluded, dying, without hope. Antonio so hopefully he will be moved to a larger city; but the years pass and Antonio helds the same job. One day he sees off the train a beautiful lady, who does the primary school teacher. Soon the two get married and start a family, but always Antonio wants to get away from Piovarolo, but politics and the ministry do not care at all about him.

Vincent and Gennaro live by their wits and petty theft in the city of Naples. On Christmas Eve, Gennaro steals a service of glasses and gives it to his girlfriend Nannarella, a poor and honest seamstress . Unfortunately, it was discovered, and Gennaro and Vincenzo are arrested. While it is recommended to St. Joseph, it seems that they shower them with a gesture of their goodwill. The story involves the power struggles and sexual intrigues of a group of good-looking nuns at the Sant Arcangelo Convent and in particular the machinations of Sister Julia (played by former Miss Great Britain Anne Heywood) as she attempts, by any means possible, to succeed to the position of the dying Mother Superior. The nuns struggle with their vows of celibacy, some inclining to lesbianism whilst others invite male lovers secretly into their cells. Meanwhile a corrupt church hopes to benefit from an aristocratic donation to the Convent, before launching an inquisition into the lubricious and corrupt activities of the inmates of the Convent. There then follow graphic scenes of torture as miscreant nuns are stripped naked and tortured with a variety of devices in order to elicit a confession of their misdemanours. The film ends with a resonant condemnation of the power hungry and corrupt church by Sister Julia after she has been found guilty and compelled to take poison to end her life.
