The film follows the existential crisis of an unnamed urban sophisticate (Vanessa Redgrave) who becomes aware of the nature of world politics, economic exploitation and the vapid consumerism around her. A series of events lead her to visit an unnamed third world country, representing an exotic location somewhere in Eastern Europe, where the entire economy and populace are geared towards the tourist industry. Even as she enjoys the rare taste of its products she is made starkly aware of the reality behind the façade by a journalist (Michael Moore) who, subsequently, suggests a visit to the country's war-torn neighbour in order to experience a true picture of life in the region. She does so and her life is changed forever.

It is a period piece set in 1913 in Zagreb (which was at the time part of Austria-Hungary) and follows members of the fictional Glembay family, headed by Ignjat Glembay (Tonko Lonza), a prominent banker, and his second wife baroness Castelli (Ena Begović). Eleven years after his mother's suicide, Leone Glembay (Mustafa Nadarević) returns from abroad to his family home in Zagreb. He is haunted by depressing memories, particularly by thoughts of his deceased mother, his sister who committed suicide, and the Baroness Castelli, his father's second wife. The only member of his family that Leone confides in is Beatrice (Bernarda Oman), his brother Ivan's widow, who in the meantime became a nun and renamed herself Angelika. Leone witnesses omnipresent hypocrisy in the family and is repulsed by the criminal means through which his family became rich. Ultimately, Leone confronts his father and the baroness.

L'action se passe à l'orée de la Seconde Guerre mondiale (1939), et est traitée sur le ton de la comédie. Une troupe de théâtre polonaise répète laborieusement une pièce mettant en scène Hitler, alors que dans la réalité les troupes allemandes vont envahir la Pologne. Censurés, le théâtre et ses acteurs doivent redonner Hamlet. Un jeune pilote de bombardier est amoureux de l'actrice, Maria Tura. En essayant de la contacter depuis Londres, il découvre une opération d'espionnage visant le démantèlement de la Résistance polonaise. Il est parachuté à Varsovie pour tenter de court-circuiter l'opération. Il retrouve Maria et la troupe, qui vont devoir mettre à profit leur talent pour sauver la Résistance et, profitant des costumes de SS et d'un sosie d'Hitler (Tom Dugan), essayer d'abuser la Gestapo et sauver leur peau.
