Harto The Borges is a documentary film created by Eduardo Montes-Bradley. Harto The Borges escapes the unwritten rule of biographical films on Latin American writers by exploring the narcissistic side of the author, his frequent and often criticized comments to the press, his distinctive and gentle ironies. Harto The Borges had a Theatrical release in Buenos Aires in September 2000, and was well received by the critics. Since them has been frequently exhibited at forums, campuses, and film festivals. On October 4, 2011, Harto The Borges was made available to the general audience in Argentina through the On Line version of Revista Cultura Ñ, (Diario Clarin) in Buenos Aires. The film was released alongside an article in which the director views the film ten years after its premier at the Cine Cosmos.

Synopsis

Montes-Bradley approaches Jorge Luis Borges on film. The portrait of Borges emerges as a counterpoint to the interviewees, some of which evoke scandal and most of which cut through stereotypes and presuppositions surrounding this key figure. The title of the film is a reference to a quote from the poem “Borges and I”, slightly modify to pay a tribute to the writer´s billings. The strategy employed by Montes-Bradley when it comes to Borges, a writer of whom almost everything has been said, consists on giving the word to the writer himself and to a select group of intellectuals who dwell on the margins of the Argentine cultural aparatik. Montes-Bradley, however, does not exhibit Borges like a painting to be admired but rather as counterpoint to the observations of others. We are neither the hapless witnesses of another saccharine celebration of Jorge Luis Borges, nor are we forced to endure another fashionable defrocking of an idol. The Borges that emerges from the interaction of the testimonies in this documentary surges from the heat of the debate, from the strong opinions, some certainly scandalous, most politically incorrect.

Thèmes Film sur un écrivain

The film is made of a series of in-depth, on-camera interviews with Poet Laureate Rita Dove—conducted and recorded between September 2012 and October 2013. These interviews were edited with hundreds of still images and several hours of home movies from the Dove family's collection. The intimacy of the dialogue between Rita Dove and Montes-Bradley's camera provide a rare personal insight into the wide range of Dove's artistic passions. Most of these images are the results of the efforts of Rita Dove's father (Ray A. Dove) to record family life in the 1950s and 1960s. Mr. Ray Dove recorded in 8mm and Super 8mm birthdays, the opening of gifts on Christmas Day year after year, holidays and family excursions. According to the filmmaker, "Rita's father is omnipresent and perhaps the silent protagonist of the film as he captured images of Rita which have become fundamental clues to the evolution of the suburban middle class African American child into the celebrated poet we know and recognize.

In Samba On Your Feet (2006) the filmmakers go behind the Carioca milieu to document samba and carnival. The one-hour documentary traces the influences that contributed to shape the music that consecrated Carnival as one of the most powerful cultural manifestations in Brazil. Roots and perspectives, flesh and ghosts, entities and divinities spread across the slums and over the sidewalks of Salvador, Bahia and Rio de Janeiro are essential to the make-up of the Brazilian musical exponent par excellence. Samba On Your Feet introduces the voices of Cartola, Caetano Veloso, Ismael Silva, Clara Nunes, Clementina and many others whose perspectives on the cultural affairs of Rio de Janeiro that have been carefully articulated with interviews to exponents of the Brazilian culture today. This dialogue between past and present takes place throughout the movie between precious scenes of archive footage from private collection, and government resources. Samba On Your Feet was mostly shot in the marginal slums, in the umbanda terreiros, in the favelas where the less fortunate inhabitants of Rio strive to overcome overwhelming rates crime and illiteracy to the rhythm and soul of the music they call samba.
