Marins is also known by his alter ego Zé do Caixão (in English, Coffin Joe). It is the third installment of his Coffin Joe trilogy. It is preceded by At Midnight I'll Take Your Soul (1963) and This Night I'll Possess Your Corpse (1967).
A flashback scene in the film reveals that the young Coffin Joe (portrayed in the scene by Raymond Castile) survived after submerging in a swamp at the end of the previous film. After serving 40 years in a prison mental ward, Coffin Joe (José Mojica Marins) is released to the streets of modern day São Paulo. Immediately after his release, Coffin Joe renews his lifelong obsession to sire a male child with a woman whom he perceives to be of exceptional qualities capable of continuing his bloodline, which he feels to be "superior" above all others.

Zé do Caixão, dit Coffin Joe, un croquemort nitzschéen dans l'âme, cherche la "femme parfaite" qui pourra donner naissance à l'être supérieur. Mais dans un petit village paumé du Brésil, où la population vit dans la peur permanente de la punition céleste, la quête de Zé n'est pas chose facile. D'autant plus qu'il abhorre tous ces paysans crédules, et que sa femme, Lenita, est stérile. Zé décide donc de l'éliminer afin d'avoir le champ libre pour conquérir Terezinha, la fiancée de son meilleur ami, Antonio. Terezinha refusant ses avances, Zé la viole après avoir fracassé la tête d'Antonio. Souillée, elle se suicide mais promet à Zé de revenir hanter son âme.

Coffin Joe returns to his village after recovering in a hospital from shock and blindness from the events in the previous film. Having been absolved of his previous crimes and murders, this time he is even more determined to find the "perfect" woman with whom to sire a son of superior lineage, for his singular, obsessive desire for the "continuity of blood". Assisted by his gaunt, hunchbacked, facially disfigured servant Bruno, he kidnaps six beautiful women the first night he returns to town. He puts them through a series of sadistic trials to determine if one of them exhibits no fear, indicating superiority to bear his son. When the woman named Marcia remains proudly unaffected while the others scream and beg to the terrors they are submitted into, Coffin Joe retains her as his chosen and imprisons the other five in a pit below his bedroom, where he releases poisonous snakes to kill them. Too shocked with what Coffin Joe had done, however, Marcia refuses to make love with him, and Coffin Joe lets her go stating he knows she won't report him to the authorities.
