Riche homme d'affaires franco-américain, Laurent Ségur est heureux de présenter sa nouvelle compagne, Catherine Graziani, à son jeune fils, Pascal, dix ans, dont la maman est morte accidentellement. C'est le début des vacances d'été. Pascal veut les passer en Corse. Là, au bord de la mer, son père et lui voient exploser un avion militaire dont le pilote a pu larguer en parachute le précieux chargement : une bombe atomique. Irradié, Pascal est atteint de leucémie et n'a plus que six mois à vivre. Laurent, qui doit son propre salut au fait d'avoir été sous l'eau au moment fatidique, décide d'offrir à l'enfant la vie la plus merveilleuse qui soit et l'emmène vivre au château qu'il a acheté, où les attendent Verdun, qui fut son compagnon de résistance, et la vieille gouvernante Marinette.

La Fleur de l'âge est un film inachevé de Marcel Carné. Il reprend le scénario écrit par Jacques Prévert, pour un précédent projet, film que Carné aurait dû alors tourner sous le titre l'Île des enfants perdus (1937). Le scénario s'inspirait de l'histoire d'une révolte d'adolescents détenus au bagne d'enfants de Belle-Île-en-Mer (1934), lors de laquelle les autorités organisèrent, pour récupérer les fugitifs, une chasse avec prime à laquelle participèrent habitants et touristes.

Annie, left orphaned after the death of her mother, goes to live in an orphanage where she tells her fellow orphans stories of ghosts and goblins. The matron of the orphanage finds Annie's closest relative, the abusive Uncle Thomp. Her uncle who puts her to hard work doing hard labor on his farm, belittling her all the while. Big Dave, a neighbor and tough cow-poke sees this and comes to her aid. Dave becomes her protector. Eventually Annie goes to live with Squire Goode and his large family. There, she entertains the children of the household with her stories, but sees her abusive aunt and uncle as her chief tormentors. She tells stories of how the goblins will take away the children if they are not good. Each story she tells is illustrated. War breaks out and Dave, who Annie adores, enlists. Uncle Thomp, hearing that Dave has been killed in action, takes pleasure in telling Annie the news. Broken-hearted, Annie falls ill and dies in bed, surrounded by family.

Ann (Mae Marsh) is a young girl who has been living in an orphanage since infancy.
