Country Town is a 1971 Australian drama film directed by Peter Maxwell, produced by Fenton Rosewarne and starring Terry McDermott, Gary Gray and Lynette Curran. It was a film version of the Australian television series Bellbird, written by Barbara Vernon.

Synopsis

A severe drought strikes the town of Bellbird. Young reporter Philip Henderson arrives and stirs old tensions. The locals rally together and hold a fund-raising gymkhana.

Au fond de la forêt, loin du fort le plus proche, dans une contrée sauvage, un fermier, David Harvey, vit avec son épouse et son jeune fils, de labours, d'un peu d'élevage, de chasse et de pêche. Les Indiens sont encore menaçants. Son épouse décède, David a besoin d'une femme pour l'aider, tenir la maison, élever son fils. Au fort il achète une servante, Rachel, et pour sauver les bonnes mœurs et les apparences, l'épouse. Une fois arrivée, la jeune femme est traitée sans ménagement par David et son fils. Ce jusqu'à l'arrivée du meilleur ami de Davey, Jim, un coureur des bois, qui voit en Rachel une jolie femme -il lui offre une robe-, intelligente, éduquée - elle joue de l'épinette - et courageuse -elle s'entraîne secrètement à tirer au fusil dans la cave-, il flirte ouvertement avec elle. Cela ouvre les yeux de David, suscite sa jalousie. Les deux hommes s'affrontent, Rachel s'enfuit dans la forêt, ils la rattrapent pendant la nuit. Rachel voit le ciel s'embraser : des Indiens attaquent la ferme. Elle se joint aux deux hommes pour la défendre. Au petit matin, la ferme est en cendres, Rachel et David s'avouent leur amour et Jim, le coureur des bois, retourne à sa vie aventureuse.

In the 1960s, Danny (Noah Taylor), a thin, socially awkward adolescent, falls in love with his best friend Freya (Loene Carmen) in rural New South Wales, Australia. Unfortunately, she is attracted to Trevor (Ben Mendelsohn), a high school rugby star, larrikin and petty criminal who helps Danny with the school bullies. Shortly after sleeping with Freya at the abandoned house, Trevor steals a car for a joyride and is arrested and sent to juvenile detention; it is while he is away that Freya reveals to Danny that she is pregnant. Danny offers to marry her and claim that the child is his, but Freya refuses, saying that she does not want to marry anyone. Meanwhile, intrigued by a locket left to Freya by an elderly friend of theirs who recently died -engraved "SEA"- Danny begins to investigate the town's past, and discovers a lone cross in the cemetery bearing those initials, belonging to a "Sara Elizabeth Amery," who died days after Freya was born. Through inquiries with his parents, Danny learns that Sara was something of the town prostitute years ago, and that she was Freya's biological mother, who died trying to give birth by herself at the abandoned house.
