Continental is a film directed by Malcolm Ingram, which premiered at SXSW festival on March 10, 2013. The film is a documentary about the history of the Continental Baths, a historic gay bathhouse in New York City. It is also, notably, Ingram's first film since 1999's Tail Lights Fade not to have Kevin Smith on board as a co-producer. The film was funded with help from Kickstarter

Prominent figures appearing in the film, either in archival footage or in new interviews, include Jaye P. Morgan, Holly Woodlawn, Michael Musto, Frankie Knuckles, Bette Midler and Sarah Dash.

The film opens with a rapid montage of visuals that transport people back to the 1970s in and around Greenwich Village. Driving disco music of the time sets the pace. Using intimate interviews it begins to develop the story of gay sex in the 70′s through characters such as Larry Kramer, Scott Bromley, Barton Benes, Rodger McFarlane, and others. These characters begin to expand the elements that were visually introduced. They talk about the public sex: the streets, the piers, and the trucks.

Told through the narration of Sandy Stone, who acts as a sort of tour guide, the film documents the lives of a group of transgender individuals, and one intersex individual, living in San Francisco, California. The narration provided by Stone is cut with interviews that develop and illustrate the ideas and themes she discusses in her vignettes. The film is shot on location in San Francisco, with the interviews of the subjects taking place in their natural settings and surroundings including their homes, offices, and the streets of San Francisco. The film explains, through the lives of its subjects, both the social and practical changes and decisions necessary for them to endure in order to live their lives as they see fit on the edge of traditional gender roles. The idea of gender neutrality is promoted throughout the film. Gender is not a characteristic that should be used to define a person. The film also shows how the subjects all interact with one another in the transgender subculture of San Francisco.
