The main producers are the Slovene Stara Gara and the Irish Fastnet Films. Silent Sonata is the first official Slovene-Irish-Swedish-Finnish co-production and was shot in 35 days in Slovenia and Ireland. The world premiere took place on the International Film Festival Rotterdam in 2011. The production crew included members from at least 18 countries. The film's original title was Circus Fantasticus, but only in Slovenia, as it is distributed under its original title.
The film was selected as the Slovenian entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 84th Academy Awards, however, the Society of Slovene filmmakers (Društvo slovenskih filmskih ustvarjalcev, DSFU) neglected to officially submit the entry in time because of a misunderstanding within the organization, so it wasn't included in the final list of entries.

Esma, mère célibataire, vit avec sa fille de douze ans, Sara, dans le Sarajevo d'après-guerre. Sara souhaite partir en voyage scolaire, et Esma commence à travailler comme serveuse dans une boîte de nuit afin d'économiser l'argent nécessaire. Sara devient amie avec Samir qui, comme elle, n'a pas de père. Leurs pères respectifs sont supposés morts en héros. Samir est surpris que Sara ignore les circonstances du décès de son père : son père à lui a été massacré par les Tchetniks près de Žuč parce qu'il refusait de quitter la tranchée qu'il défendait. Pourtant, chaque fois que mère et fille évoquent ce sujet délicat, les réponses d'Esma se font vagues. La situation se complique alors que l'école propose d'emmener gratuitement les enfants en voyage, à condition qu'ils fournissent un certificat prouvant que leur père est mort en héros. Esma explique à Sara que le corps de son père n'a jamais été retrouvé, et ainsi elle ne possède pas un tel certificat. Elle promet cependant d'essayer de l'obtenir.

Luna et Amar forment un couple très amoureux à Sarajevo. Tout pourrait être pour le mieux s’il n’y avaient les problèmes d’Amar avec l’alcool et la difficulté du couple à avoir un enfant. The plot of the movie is centered in the city of Karlovac in 1992, during the Croatian War of Independence. The front lines, where Croatian and Serbian forces fight each other, lie near the city. Meanwhile, in the city of Karlovac, a Serbian civilian Vasić is murdered. Tatjana (Zrinka Cvitešić) and Miljenko (Robert Ugrina) are a young married Croatian couple living in Germany. Miljenko is killed when he falls while working on a construction site and his employer pays a financial settlement to his young widow. Tatjana then moves back to the rural countryside of Croatia where the couple first met. There she meets Father Stipan (Leon Lučev), an alcoholic Catholic priest of the local rundown church. Tatjana uses the settlement money to make a romantic purchase of the hill where Miljenko proposed to her only to make a small fortune when a local developer discovers precious minerals in the hill and pays Tatjana handsomely for it. She uses her newly acquired riches to purchase a grocery store and a hotel. Tatjana becomes a target for new prospective suitors, including her husband's brother Marinko (Ivo Gregurević), who has also recently returned from Germany. Tatjana falls in love with the troubled priest and offers most of her money to him so that the church can be repaired and the parish does not go bankrupt. Under the local bishop's (Ivica Vidović) threat of relocation if the funds aren't raised, Father Stipan is torn between choosing to accept Tatjana's money to be given to the church and choosing Tatjana's love.

Danko Babić (Rene Bitorajac) is highly successful and much sought after as a doctor of gynecology, but at the same time he is also incredibly ambitious and willing to do whatever it takes to succeed. These traits eventually lead him to Jedinko (Emir Hadžihafizbegović), a pimp who specializes in high-end prostitution and drug dealing. He's willing to pay Danko a considerable sum to perform abortions on his prostitutes, who get pregnant on a regular basis. Danko quickly gets pulled into a world of organized crime, corruption, and scandal.
