It is a remake of 1956 Telugu film Muddu Bidda produced and directed by K. B. Tilak.
The story is originally based on a Bengali novel "Bindur Chhele" written by the famous Bengali author Saratchandra Chatterjee.
Synopsis
Radha (Sharmila Tagore) was the only daughter of a rich merchant. She suffers from epilepsy, triggered especially by the removal of little doll she always carries with her. Madhu (Rajesh Khanna) was a young doctor, practicing in a village. He lives along with his older brother Shriram (Tarun Bose) and sister-in-law Sita (Nirupa Roy). Local unqualified medical practitioner, whose business got a big hit by the practice of Madhu, begrudgingly arranges match between Madhu and Radha, hiding her illness. The story opens against the backdrop of idyllic hilly terrain with Indian air force officer Arun Varma (Rajesh Khanna) crooning "Mere sapno ki rani" atop an open jeep along with his co-pilot Madan (Sujit Kumar), while Vandana (Sharmila Tagore), the daughter of a doctor Gopal Tripathi (Pahadi Sanyal) demurely sneaks glances at him from a mini train. The story begins in the Central Jail, where a prisoner (Raza Murad) being hanged in the morning is desperately bewailing his fate. His fears are soothed somewhat by another inmate named Chetan (Rajesh Khanna) who tells him that he is not dying but starting a new life elsewhere in a body free from sin. The principle comforts the prisoner and jail inmate becomes happy. Chetan has served a 10-year-long sentence for murder and is about to be released early for good behavior. The Jailor (Murad) is curious how such an obviously empathetic and honest man as Chetan has proved to be could be a murderer as well, and he asks Chetan to explain. Initially Chetan refuses gently but then starts disclosing his past.

Shankar & Bhawariya are childhood lovers who have been parted by unfortunate circumstances. Shankar's cousin Suresh (Deven Verma) is an advocate. Matchmaker Ram comes up with marriage proposals for both the cousins. Following family traditions, it is decided that the boys will meet the respective brides by proxy. Suresh falls in love with Madhumati (Bhawariya). He cooks up a wicked plot. He writes two letters to each of the families. Shankar comes to know that Madhumati is Bhawariya, the girl whom he used to love. In a rift between Shankar & Suresh, Suresh dies accidentally for which Shankar is held the culprit. Madumati who is determined to see her husband's murderer hanged, changes her words & saves Shankar.

Movie starts with the desperate attempt of surgeon Dr.Neela (Sharmila Tagore) to save a patient, who she knew wouldn't going to survive. She works under the guidance of Dr. Chandra (Ashok Kumar) who tells her that however hard doctor might try, sometimes patient wouldn't survive. Story drifts into flashback. Neela meets Avinash (Rajesh Khanna) at medical college and after initial misunderstanding, grows close with him. Avinash was a poor guy who earns his living him-selves while attending medical college. He paints too and Neela finds out that most of his paintings are of her. Though he admires Neela very much, he never talks about love or marriage. Everyone thinks that it's because of his financial status, but it is later revealed that he was a cancer patient and not have much time to live.

Manish (Deepak Kumar) lives with his brother Anand (Ashok Kumar) an advocate, and sister-in-law Tilottama (Nirupa Roy), in Kashmir. Manish has just returned from abroad having completed his medical degree. Neena (Vimi) has come to Kashmir for her holidays and meets Manish and they fall in love. Manish is waiting to get a job confirmation from one of the hospitals in Bombay. Neena’s sister Sharda (Leela Naidu) lives with her husband Chandrashekhar (Rehman) in Bombay. The two are very uch in love with each other. Being childless Sharda is harassed by her mother-in-law Mrs. Verma (Lalita Pawar). Sharda asks Shekhar to get married again but he refuses. Mrs. Verma's harassment of Sharda turns to tragedy when two relatives Darwazalal (Jeevan) and Shanta (Shashikala) come to live with them. Nina is also staying in the house with her sister. Darwazalal poison's Sharda who while dying makes Nina promise that she will marry Shekhar. After Sharda dies Nina and a distraught Shekhar get married. Shekhar has no interest in Nina as he is still grieving the loss of his beloved wife Sharda.

Lala Gulabchand (Dewan Sharar), is a Punjabi and his wife is from Uttar Pradesh. They live at the corner of a crossroads with three lights and four roads. He is a firm believer in national unity and has had five of his six sons, each married to a girl from a different state; a Marathi, Sindhi, Bengali, Tamil and a Gujarati. His sixth son Ramesh (Karan Dewan), works in the press and is a writer and an artist. He is a bachelor but falls in love with a woman named Kokila whose singing he hears on the radio. He draws a portrait of Kokila from imagination just listening to her sing. Unbeknownst to him, Kokila, called Shyama (Sandhya), is the dark-complexioned maid who works in their home and is proficient in all the different languages that the wives of the brothers' speak and very efficient in her chores. However, he rejects her as she's dark and Shyama leaves the house despondent. The turmoil the household goes through with the absence of Shyama and a repentant Ramesh finally makes for a happy ending by everyone getting together again.
