Synopsis
À l'intérieur d'un fort français au Sahara s'exercent des rapports de force et des affrontements, alors qu'il se retrouve cerné par des autochtones souhaitant libérer la région des colonisateurs. Le seul survivant raconte le déroulement de l'attaque et des faits qui l'ont précédé.Acteurs

Alors que l'Afrikakorps, sous le commandement du maréchal Rommel, fait route vers Le Caire, les forces britanniques, incapables de contrer son avance, choisissent de recourir à la ruse. Elles imaginent de déguiser des juifs allemands vivant en Palestine en ennemis et de les envoyer dans la citadelle de Tobrouk où Rommel a fait entreposer les réserves de carburant de son armée. Pour atteindre Tobrouk, le commando doit parcourir huit cents kilomètres dans le désert. C'est le début d'un périple peu commun, où les pseudo-nazis, dans des voitures volées aux Allemands, franchissent les lignes adverses en escortant des Anglais désarmés censés être leurs prisonniers. Pendant le voyage, le groupe manœuvre de telle sorte qu'une colonne de chars allemands et italiens, se croyant l'une comme l'autre attaquée par les Anglais, se livrent bataille. Le commando en profite pour passer sans être repéré.

The War Between the States has just ended as the action in this work begins, following five Union soldiers as they return to their homes in the Ozarks of northern Arkansas, matter-of-factly planning a resumption of their pre-War existences. However, many residents from the village of Winslow and its surrounding region are averse to offering a helping hand to Yankees, Arkansas having been a member of the Confederacy. Nonetheless, some Winslow citizens are working to close the nation's divisiveness and it is to them that the returning veterans must look for support. Ongoing animosity between both factions in a recent war provides interesting material for a film; unfortunately, this one is not composed well with a result that it fails to develop interest for viewers. Veteran director of Westerns Joseph Kane is called from retirement as an attempt to rescue this faltering production, but he is not enough to offset a stale script and a great deal of deficient acting. Although it should properly be designated as a Southern rather than as a Western, some old hands of the latter genre are present, including Walter Brennan in his last feature film outing, John Russell, Myron Healey, and Dan White, each of whom plays creditably, although unavailingly, given the screenplay shortcomings. Locals, along with stuntmen, fill many of the parts, while members of a remarkable quartet composed of the lead females either are barely able to read their lines or overact to an absurd extent, sure signs of too few takes and a lack of direction. Cinematographer Mario Tosi creates a visually sensuous environment, one that correctly utilizes natural light; the sound mixing, however, is eccentric. The Ozark location is extraordinarily beautiful, and Tosi takes full advantage of its luxuriance so that in each scene, notwithstanding the action's failure to consistently draw in the viewer, there remains much to enjoy in the pictoral sense; 'tis less than providential that for Kane's swan song, the landscape steals the show.

The "Moon Valley Short line" Railroad is losing money to the "Armstrong Trucking Company". When the railroad goes into receivership, the railroad is forced to lay off several people. The president of the railroad, Jed Carson, has acquired a hatred for the new receiver, Lawrence 'Larry' Doyle. His granddaughter, Kay Carson, also does not like Doyle. After getting himself acquainted with both Jed Carson and Kay Carson, Doyle goes and wins back some business. Kay starts take a liking to Doyle, but her grandfather still hates him. When the new customer's freight is damaged, Doyle knows it is the Armstrong Trucking Company. After talking to Doyle it is revealed that the owner of the Armstrong Trucking corp, Mr. Armstrong, had Doyle appointed as the receiver, thinking it would benefit him. However, Doyle has no plans to help the Armstrong Trucking Company. Now that the railroad has won some business back, it must work on its speed, to attract more business. Doyle asks a former railroad employee to run a fast freight to beat the trucking company's schedule. When the train is mysteriously wrecked, the town blames Doyle. However, Jed Carson does research and finds that the wreck was not Doyle's fault, and reveals it to the people of the town. Before the wreck occurred, the train beat the trucking company's schedule. When the trucking company challenges the railroad to a race for a contract, the railroad starts to win, but is sabotaged by the trucking company, which has been sabotaging the railroad all along. With no water in the water tank, the engine cannot run, but Doyle thinks up the idea to use the ice in the refrigerator cars. Cutting it close, the railroad wins, and Armstrong and his henchmen are convicted when one of the trucking company's employees writes a confession. The film ends with Kay embracing Doyle, for she has fallen for him.

Western movie star Tom Ford (Gene Autry) is scheduled to make a guest appearance at the Texas Centennial celebration in Dallas. When Ford leaves on vacation intending to miss the celebration, his publicity manager Lee Wilson (William Newell) convinces singing cowboy Gene Autry (Gene Autry) to appear in Tom's place.
