Attakathi (Tamil: அட்டகத்தி ; English: Card Board Knife ) is a 2012 Indian Tamil romantic comedy film written and directed by Pa. Ranjith, a former assistant of Venkat Prabhu. Produced by Thirukumaran Entertainment and distributed by Studio Green, it stars Dinesh, Nandita and Aishwarya. The film garnered attention after being praised and promoted by several acclaimed directors. It released on 15 August 2012 on the Independence Day of India. Attakathi fetched positive reviews and emerged successful at the box office.

Synopsis

Dinakaran (Dinesh) referred as Atta among his friends is a regular semi-urban teenager growing up in a small village in the outskirts of Chennai. He did well in his school exams, but failed his English paper. Rather than studying for the second attempt, he wastes time looking for a girlfriend since he has made a pact with his best friends; to fall in love and get married.

One morning in his house, Saravanan (Udhayanidhi Stalin) receives his ex-girlfriend, Meera's (Hansika Motwani) wedding invitation. He phones his friend Parthasarathy aka Partha (Santhanam) to come with his janvasa car. On his way to Pondicherry, Saravanan thinks of his flashback. He was a ruthless youth. One day in traffic, he sees Meera and falls for her on the site. He follows her to a cloth shop and also to her Air Hostess class. He sees her house and he and Partha goes to her house as Meera calls them. There, Meera threatens Saravanan by showing her dad's photo, who is a Deputy Commissioner. But still, Saravanan follows her and asks her to love him. Meera takes her to her dad's office and he asks Saravanan to stop following Meera. Meera tells Saravanan that she has some qualifications required by her lover like shaving regularly, dressing well, breaking his friendship with Partha, coming on time, etc. Saravanan tells this to Partha and Partha asks him if Meera or he is best for him. Saravanan tells Meera is more important to him than Partha and this causes a break between Saravanan's and Partha's friendship. Later, Saravanan joins the broken love of Partha and asks him to rejoin his love. Partha agrees and then they go to Mumbai, following Meera in a flight. There, Meera alas tells that she loves Saravanan. After some months, Meera calls Saravanan once, but he does not pick up the phone and tells Partha that Meera is not real love and it is all a drama. But he really tells this for fun. But Partha had accidentally switched on the phone while Saravanan told all these. Meera, mistaking him for intentionally misusing her, comes there and breaks their love. Now, at Pondicherry, during Meera's marriage, both Saravanan and Partha end up drunk and tell a small story, in a comical way describing the broken love of Saravanan and Meera. Just as the marriage is going to happen, Rajini Murugan (Arya) comes there with a pregnant girl and his wife (Andrea Jeremiah) and tells that Meera's groom has a girlfriend who is pregnant by him and that the girl Rajini Murugan is with, is that girl. The groom agrees his mistake and reunites with his old girlfriend. Saravanan and Partha walk off the Hall, just then Meera comes and hugs Saravanan, hence reuinting with him.

An aspiring young wannabe actor Raja (Rajinikanth) from a village get into a fast city which is full of crooks and drug dealers. As he searching for a place in the dream factory, he falls for the daughter of the house owner (Jaiganesh). Charmed by his looks and character, the girl (Gowthami) also falls for him. One day he accidentally meet his childhood friend Bhaskar (Raghuvaran) who is a spoiled rich guy. He offers Raja an acting job, then takes him to his uncle's house. Raja is to be in charge of the administration of the household and take care of five children (Bhaskar's nieces and nephews) each of whom have issues (such as being lazy, not studying etc). Raja finds out that Bhaskar is cheating his uncle out of funds and using him to do the same. Bhaskar involves in drug business along with his associates (Azhagu, Kitty). Ravichandran who has blindness recovers from the problem and pretends to be blind in order to find out the truth of Bhaskar. After finding out the truth, Ravichandran throws Bhaskaran out of the home. In retaliation, Bhaskar takes away his uncle's car resulting in Ravichandran getting arrested for drugs. Raja along with children goes to Bhaskar's den catches him redhandedly.

The movie starts of with Sigamani(Bharath) as a young student refusing to go to school. Due to the fact that Sigamani is uneducated, he is easily cheated by his friends(Badava Gopi,etc...). His only trustable friend is PaalPandi(Karunakaran), who follows his wherever he goes. In desperation to get married to an educated girl, Sigamani plans to wait outside a college to find a girl to love. He then sees Nandini(Nanditha) and decides to go after her. One day, both Sigamani and PaalPandi follow Nandini and finally end up in her house. After listening to an unknown phonecall, Nandini's father(Silambu Chinnadurai) mistake Sigamani to be a doctor who has studied MBBS. This is when all the confusion starts. Thinking that Sigamani is a doctor, Chinnadurai arranges for the marriage. The marriage also takes place successfully and Sigamani is happy as his dream of marrying an educated girl has come true. Before the interval, the director then places another major twist in the story, to keep the audience in the edge of their seats.To be continued.
