At the Sign of the Jack O'Lantern is a 1922 American comedy-drama silent film based on the eponymous novel by Myrtle Reed. The film was directed by Lloyd Ingraham, who co-wrote the film adaption with David Kirkland. It stars Betty Ross Clarke, Earl Schenck and Wade Boteler. The survival status of the film is lost.

Synopsis

Harlan Carr is left $600 and a country home in New England by his uncle's will. The will provides that a future legacy will come to him if he entertains a number of guests, all married relations of the uncle. Carr and his wife take up residence in the home, where all kinds of ghostly events take place. After the arrival of the guests, they quickly make life miserable for the couple, who tolerate them and their unpleasantness for fear of losing the legacy. At last Harlan loses all patience and orders them from the house. Then, unexpectedly, the family lawyer informs the Carrs that having done exactly as their uncle wished, they will be rewarded with the remainder of their uncle's money.

As described in a film magazine, the daughter of the "chewing gum king" Joan Hope (Minter) has social aspirations, but is held back by the fact that her father manufactures gum. She meets a countess (Shelby) on a train, who offers to lend Joan her title for a week if she will hold a package for her. Joan accepts, not knowing that the "countess" is actually a thief and that the package contains stolen diamonds. Joan passes herself off as a countess at a big hotel, and detective Kent Standish (Forrest) begins to shadow her. The countess and her gang of crooks try to recover the package of diamonds, causing several entangling situations until Joan escapes with the detective, whom she has come to love.

Ann (Mae Marsh) is a young girl who has been living in an orphanage since infancy. She is disliked and spurned by the other children, and treated coldly by the orphanage administrators—the reason for this, however, is unclear. She is told by the orphanage cook Black Cindy (Madame Sul-Te-Wan) during a palm-reading that she will be cursed until she is married.
