Ajouter à une liste de filmsAmericathon (also known as Americathon 1998) is a 1979 American comedy film starring John Ritter, Fred Willard, Peter Riegert, Harvey Korman, and Nancy Morgan, with narration by George Carlin, based on a play by Firesign Theatre alumni Phil Proctor and Peter Bergman. The film also includes appearances by Jay Leno, Meat Loaf, Tommy Lasorda, and Chief Dan George, with a musical performance by Elvis Costello.
Being cast 20 years into the future, the film contains many prophetic elements, such as: predicting the demise of the Soviet Union, the prevalence of reality television, and the sale of public assets to the private sector (a trend starting shortly after the film's release.) Also, The Beach Boys are shown still together and recording in 1998.
Synopsis
In the (then-near future) year 1998, the USA has run out of oil, and many Americans are living in their now-stationary cars and using other non-gas-powered means of transportation such as jogging, riding bicycles and rollerskating. Many Americans wear sweatsuits. In search of leadership, Americans elect Chet Roosevelt (Ritter) as President. Roosevelt, a "cosmically inspired" former governor of California, proves to have little else in common with Teddy Roosevelt or FDR other than his name. Roosevelt, an overly-optimistic man who quotes positive affirmation slogans, stages a number of highly publicized fund raising events, all of which fail. Real money comes in the form of loans from a cartel of Native Americans, led by billionaire Sam Birdwater (George), in control of Nike (which has been renamed "National Indian Knitting Enterprise").Acteurs

Au début du XXII siècle, la compagnie Buy-N-Large monopolise l'économie de la Terre par un trust concernant les biens et les services. Il est devenu un gouvernement mondial globalisé. La surconsommation effrénée a tôt fait de transformer le monde en un dépotoir gigantesque. La société commandite un exode massif à bord de vaisseaux spatiaux dans une tentative de préserver l'Humanité. Des milliers de machines robotiques dénommées WALL-E (Waste Allocation Load Lifter-Earthclass) ont été fabriquées par la compagnie. Ces engins ont pour unique tache de « nettoyer » la Terre en compactant la myriade de détritus qui parsèment le sol, durant les cinq années que doit durer l'exode. Mais beaucoup d'entre eux se désactivent inexplicablement et sont hors-services, forçant les humains qui n'ont pas d'autres plans de replis à rester dans l'espace.

The plot of the movie revolves around a new television network called TunnelVision which is notably free of censorship and has thus become the most-watched channel in television history. In the then-future year of 1985, the president of TunnelVision (Proctor) is under Senate investigation led by a Senator (Hesseman) who wishes to shut down the channel due to its perceived widespread negative effects on the population of the United States. The bulk of the movie consists of commercials, shorts, and trailers for fictional movies that are usually not connected to one another. These are being shown during a Congressional Oversight Committee hearing as a representative day of TunnelVision programming. At the end of the film, the committee finds in favor of TunnelVision, but the network president is shot and killed by a crazed French chef who had been a running gag throughout the segments.
