Il met en vedette Amitabh Bachchan en tant que protagoniste Vijay Deenanath Chauhan avec Mithun Chakraborty, Madhavi, Neelam Kothari, Rohini Hattangadi et Danny Denzongpa en tant qu'antagoniste Kancha Cheena. Le film a été produit par Yash Johar.
Le titre a été tiré d'un poème du même nom appelé 'Agneepath' qui a été écrit par Harivansh Rai Bachchan , le père d'Amitabh, et qui est récité au début du film et crée un lien thématique qui persiste à travers le film, en particulier dans le climax, à la fois littéralement et métaphoriquement.
Agneepath s’est transformé en un film culte au cours des années. Amitabh Bachchan a reçu son premier National Film Award du meilleur acteur au 38e National Film Awards pour sa performance. Mithun Chakraborty a reçu le prix Filmfare du meilleur second rôle. Le film, bien qu'étant le dixième film plus rentable de 1990, a eu des recettes inférieures à son budget élevé : il a fait un flop au box-office. Le film a été refait en 2012 avec le même titre, par Karan Johar, le fils de Yash Johar, en hommage à son père.

During a Buzkashi competition with a neighboring tribe in Afghanistan, Badshah Khan (Amitabh Bachchan) falls in love with Benazir (Sridevi) and wants to marry her. Benazir agrees to marry him on the condition that he must bring her the head of Habib Ullah who killed her father. Badshah Khan goes to India to search for Habibullah. He finds Habibullah in a prison and breaks him out to take him back. He has the jailer Ranveer Singh (Vikram Gokhale) on his trail. In the end he chops off Habibulla's head. He told Ranveer that he would be back in one month to receive punishment (from the Law) for taking Habibulla. Badshah goes back to Afghanistan and marries Benazir; after the time limit he comes back to India and surrenders himself to Rajput Khan and is jailed for five years. While he is away he leaves his childhood friend Khuda Baksh (Danny Denzongpa) to take care of his wife.

Neha is the only daughter of wealthy and widowed Mr. Khanna, and he would like to see her married and well settled before he passes on.
