The film starred Juhi Chawla, Jackie Shroff and Amrita Singh in lead roles. The film is about sibling rivalry. The film was a blockbuster hit in India, and solidified Juhi Chawla's career as a leading lady in the 1990s. The film was remade in Telugu as Aayanaki Iddaru, in Tamil as Kalyana Vaibhogam and in Kannada as Yare Nee Abhimani.
Synopsis
Roma (Amrita Singh) and Reema Mathur (Juhi Chawla) are the daughters of Mr. Mathur (Saeed Jaffery), a wealthy businessman. Roma, the older one, has always been spoiled, gets everything she desires, and is very competitive. Reema is quite reserved and usually lets her sister take the spotlight. Both grow up to be entirely different. The only similarity is that the sisters fall in love with the same man, Ravi Saxena (Jackie Shroff).Acteurs

La belle Kiran Awasthi (Juhi Chawla) termine ses études et rentre auprès de son frère, de sa belle-sœur, et de son fiancé. Son fiancé, Sunil Malhotra (Sunny Deol), est un officier de marine courageux et téméraire, très amoureux de Kiran. Rahul Mehra (Shahrukh Khan), le fils du supérieur hiérarchique de Sunil, est lui aussi fou amoureux en secret de Kiran. Un soir, il lui déclare sa passion, puis disparaît. Puis c’est par téléphone qu’il la harcèle. Il cherche à la rencontrer, et va jusqu’à blesser Sunil pour ça. Celui-ci, inquiet de la tournure que prend ce délire passionnel, décide d’épouser au plus vite Kiran et de partir en lune de miel le plus loin possible. Ils font croire qu’ils partent pour Goa mais s’envolent pour la Suisse.

A wealthy and independent industrialist, JK alias Jai Kishan befriends a young man from a middle-class background by the name of Munish Mehra, assists him financially to go abroad and get necessary qualifications as an engineer, and then hires him on one of his construction projects. Jai meets with and falls in love with Meena Khanna, who is the daughter of a government official. Shortly after this, Jai finds out that Munish is also attracted to Meena, and is enraged. He subsequently fires Munish, and ensures that he will not get hired anywhere else. After several vain attempts to obtain employment, Munish gets hired by the government, and is assigned to investigate the collapse of a railway bridge. Munish finds out that Jai was directly responsible for this mishap as he used sub-standard materials. Munish now has the tools to avenge his humiliation at the hands of Jai, and accordingly informs his employer. But when the time comes for Munish to make a full report, he declines, and the government has no alternative but to prosecute him in a court of law for taking bribes and destroying his report. And the main witness appearing against him is none other than Jai.

Widowed Lala Yodhraj Bhalla (Anupam Kher) lives in a palatial house with his daughter, Suman (Hema Malini), and son, Shashiraj (Raj Babbar). Both of his children are of marriageable age. He gets a shock when he finds out that Suman is in love with a lowly employee by the name of Ajit Bhardwaj (Rajesh Khanna), and refuses to give his consent for their marriage. Suman and Ajit get married in a simple ceremony, and Suman moves to Ajit's house, where she soon gets pregnant and gives birth to a son who they name Vikram alias Vicky (Rishi Kapoor). Yodhraj gets another shock when Shashiraj tells him that he would like to marry Rita (Moushmi Chatterjee), who comes from a poor family. Yodhraj asks Shashiraj to go for a trip out of town in his private air-plane. With Shashiraj out of the way, Yodhraj goes to a pregnant Rita and asks her never to see Shashiraj again and leaves a blank cheque with her. The very same day, Shashiraj is killed when his plane crashes; a guilt-ridden Suman moves back into her father's house along with Vikram, leaving Ajit alone and devastated; and a lone Rita gives birth to a young son named Arjun (Anil Kapoor). Twenty five years later, Yodhraj still lives in his palatial house with Suman and Vikram. A grown-up Arjun lives with his adopted father Inder Sen (Saeed Jaffrey) after the death of his mother Rita. He meets and befriends Vikram but is completely unaware that they are cousins. Vinod Kumar (Dilip Kumar) is an upright and honest man, who runs a newspaper named "Mashaal". Vinod exposes the ills in the society with help of his newspaper. Vinod's wife, Sudha (Waheeda Rehman), sees a vagabond named Raja (Anil Kapoor) and tries to instill some values and culture in him. Lala Kedarnath Prasanta (Balraj Sahni) has three sons whose birthdays are on the same day. On the occasion of their birthday celebration, they are visited by a well-known astrologer, who advises Lala Kedarnath not to be proud for his past achievements and to not be too optimistic about the future as fate (kismat) plays a key role in life. Lala Kedarnath ignores the prediction and is busy making plans for an even wealthier future.
