According to his father's wishes, Moon Jae-Goo attempts to bury his father's body on the island on which he was born. Because of bitter memories of his father's political past during wartime, the villagers refuse to allow his burial. A Single Spark est basé sur la vie réelle de Jeon Taeil, un ouvrier qui proteste contre les lois du travail en se brûlant à mort à l'âge de 22 ans. Kim Youngsoo, diplômée en droit, est obsédée par la mort de Jeon Taeil. Afin de mieux comprendre Jeon, il lit le journal de Jeon, Il interviewe également des personnes qui ont connu Jeon au cours de sa courte vie de travailleur manuel. Plus il en apprend sur Jeon, plus il se reconnaît dans l'ouvrier qui s'est suicidé.

Mak-dong (Han Seok-Kyu) effectue en train le trajet qui doit le ramener auprès de sa famille quand il rencontre Mi-ae (Shim Hye-jin) : alors qu'il se penche par une porte ouverte pour ressentir le souffle d'une liberté nouvelle, il reçoit sur le visage le foulard rouge de la jeune femme, qui fait la même chose que lui à la porte de la voiture voisine. Il se dirige alors vers la jeune femme et découvre trois voyous en train de la harceler. Il intervient mais se fait casser la figure, sans doute à cause de son uniforme: il vient d'obtenir sa décharge de l'armée. Mais Mak-dong est rancunier : à l'arrêt suivant, il descend pour se venger des voyous. Le train redémarre sans lui, mais avec sa valise… et avec la mystérieuse jeune femme dont il possède toujours le foulard. De retour chez lui, Mak-dong se met en quête d'un emploi pour subvenir aux besoins de sa famille, en situation précaire depuis la mort de son père.

The plot draws on No Gun Ri victims' experiences, but the characters are all fictional. The film opens with scenes establishing the ordinary domestic rhythms of a midcentury Korean village, with children at play, men relaxing over a board game, and a young teacher leading her pupils in practice for a singing contest. Loose cannon Kwak Jang-bae (Shin Ha-kyun), a neighborhood policeman, is obsessed with his sexual prowess and continually wants to have sex with his live-in girlfriend, Ji-su (Uhm Ji-won), an English teacher at a private school who is bored with his macho behavior. Forthright high-school student Ju Ja-hye (Baek Jin-hee) sells her sweat-stained panties on the internet and wants to lose her virginity to scruffy fish-sausage seller Choi-kang Sang-du (Ryoo Seung-bum); the older man is uninterested in her advances but Ja-hye cannot work out why. Ja-hye's mother (Shim Hye-jin), who sells hanbok (traditional Korean female dress), discovers the owner of a hardware shop opposite, Gi-bong (Sung Dong-il), is into S&M and starts having sessions with him in the back of his shop, assuming a dominatrix role. Kim Gwang-rok (Oh Dal-su), Ja-hye's teacher, is a married man who is secretly into wearing women's clothes when his wife is not around. When Jang-bae discovers Ji-su has ordered a vibrator, he has a major crisis over his manhood and stops sleeping with her. Meanwhile, as his neighborhood has been marked for a moral clean-up campaign by the police, it's only time before Jang-bae also bumps heads with its denizens' licentious goings-on.
